Just Bought TRS2012

So it's been years since I've been on this site and played Trainz. I used to play TRS2006 all the time but grew tired of it, but now I decided to buy and download TRS2012 from Steam today and try it out. Is it as good as you guys hoped it would be? I'm very much looking forward to playing this game.

Welcome back. I think 12 is the best yet, but I'm sure you can find some dissenting opinions!

You can always create a route in the good ol' standby TRS2006 (as it doesn't have layers, and other stuff that may cause lost work) ... and transfer the TRS2006 route into TS12 for running.

Good choice to get the latest, too bad you didn't read the many tales of woe in some forum messages concerning the Steam version. Updating can be a real challenge.

Some of the new features can also be a challenge, especially if you're used to the old ways of doing things. Content Manager has been vastly improved and now can actually mange your content. It will take some time to setup your filters and keywords but the results will make Surveyor that much easier to use. CM is also much stricter that in the past. It will not accept errors and typos that used to be overlooked but were potential performance bottlenecks. Any errors it finds in older content have to be fixed before they can be used. Warnings can be ignored for now but should be corrected when you have time to prevent future issues.

In Surveyor, the 5m grid makes smaller land-form details easier to model. The layer system allows you to lock and or hide objects so they don't interfere with the placing and adjusting of new nearby objects. You just have to remember what layer is active since there is no on screen indicator to remind you.

I find TS2012 much more stable and the AI less random but those are only my impressions. Your millage may vary. Have fun.

Be aware that TRS2012 has much less built-in content as well as routes. Also, much of what you move to TRS 2012 from earlier versions will need repairs to make it work. A somewhat tedious process.

Did I hear the word 'Steam'?

If I did hear that correctly, do not expect to be able to update, and expect problems when connecting to multiplayer sessions.

Also, make sure you remember to register your serial number.

For certain TS12 issues, my tutorial website may help. See the forum thread in my signature for the address.

There is a sticky in the TS2010 forum on how to fix many asset errors.

If you want to import content from TRS2006, my tutorial website can also help. See http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tutorials/index.php/importing-content---the-different-methods.

Ooh, Steam, that's nasty. Somebody needs to throw cold water over that thing.
Never mind, you could always cut your losses and get the up to date and patchable version from the Auran shop, we won't tell anyone about your mistake.:p
Seriously though, it is better than 06 in some ways but you may find it a steep learning curve now after being away so long. Good luck.
