Is TRS2004 dying?

No offence Paul, but if you run TC3 from TC3.

The locos still SPAD and exceed the posted speed limits.

If you run TC3 imported into TS2009, then neither happens. ;)

So i would say that was the perfect Trainz setup.
I wasn't answering the question which is better, I was pointing out the differences between TC3 and TS2009. I wouldn't say having TC3 content in TS2009 is the perfect setup if you want to create content - the TC3 CMP is ten times quicker at committing assets. If you just want to drive it may perform better even in compatibility mode though.

Onwards & upwards, that's what I say !!! (I burried my copy of 04 out in my backyard and erected a tomb stone that reads "2004 RIP" "You served me well" :'(

(mind you, I still take my grandmother to church every Sunday in my Model T Ford I purchased brand new back in 1908) !!! :hehe:

The "04 veruses the rest" debate will still be ragging in the 22nd century !!!

Rumor has it that the 'powers to be" are considering putting out a paid service pack (SP5) for 2004. Would you prefer to pay $100 for SP5 or $40 for 09 ???
Cheers, Mac... :o

You may be waiting for a very long time my friend. Many still complain about 04 and 06 and they are how old now.

Hi Meridous,
I got 04 after SP4 so I don't know what it was like before.
I am not all that interested what the scenery looks like I just want to drive or dispatch as many consists as a route will carry and run consistently for many hours.
The only problem with 04 is when I am configuring a Lars Industrial track my computer sometime seems to run out of memory and crash. Otherwise I might have maybe 1 or 2 crashes a week in well over a hundred hours of gameplay. I don't have to get all technical and sort out configs all the time to get the system to run. TO sometimes tells me a new content has a fault and I fix it as advised.

When I ran 06 I used to have 3 or 4 crashes every day. The sound was crap, but I have to admit it looked better.(which didn't really matter to me anyway)

I run XP on my laptop and have no trouble with it, my wife has Vista on hers and has trouble all the time.
Thats like taking on something like 06 & 09 which try to change the way things are, when it was OK before.
There will always be people who want to be on the leading edge of technology, no matter what, but why do the masses have to give up what they are happy with?
What about a mobile phone that just handles phone calls, you can't get one.
I am just an old dog who doesn't want to learn new tricks.

Each to his own is my motto.
Cheers Mike

Is TRS 2004 dying

I have UTC, TRS2004, TRS 2006, TC 1&2, and TRS 2009 all installed on my computer. For me, all have their good points and drawbacks, but as yet none are clear cut winners.

As to whether TRS 2004 is dying , perhaps a more accurate indicator would be to survey the number of layouts and assets being created and posted on the DLS. TRS 2004 appears to be alive and well.

Cheers.

Tis so on my machine - whereon it resides happily alongside TRS06.

Seriously though I still do all my route building on 04 because (a) I can find stuff in Surveyor and (b) I simply cannot abide the delay between clicking to place an object and the appearance of said object which afflicts 06 and later.

TRS2004 does everything I want, along with TO which let's me allocate downloads to a bin that I can name myself, making finding things in surveyor easy.
Why upgrade to 06 when all you read about on here is "cmp won't download", or "the sound in 06 is crap" ?
Why upgrade to 09 when there are obviously still so many issues with it, and nowhere near as much content as there is for 04 ? (but maybe in the future eh, who knows ;))

No, TRS2004 is doing just fine & dandy for moi at the moment, thank you very much. :D

To each their own as one may say. As Trainz versions come and go I think 04' will be around for a long time. TRS 04' is the most reliable and user friendly of all. 06' and 09' are too much alike but maybe someday 09' will be as good and reliable as 04' has come to be. I myself like 04' the best so far. Viva 04'! www.bigboytrainsandhobbies.com

I thought there was more content available for TRS2009 than TRS2004. There is all the TRS2004 content for a start.

I'm only saying I'm seeing more downloads for the TC3 versions than I'm seeing for the more limited TRS2004 versions which would suggest that people in general are starting to move away from TRS2004.

Think!

Well, if this is how long it takes you to do a shortline, God knows how long it will take you to do a major route..........:p

Cheerz. ex.
God created the heavens and the earth in seven days, on the first day he seperated the light from the dark. Now just how long was the first day?
I think you need to think befoe you post!

From what I've read, I thought a lot of 04 stuff didn't work in TRS2009, or took a lot of messing with to get it working, that's why creators have to make 2 different versions.

answer- the one that works! (footnote, if they consider an improvment to 04, tells you that they acknowledge 09 was a mistake).

My TRS2004 versions are simplified because TRS2004 doesn't handle the more complicated scripts. So the TC3 versions have operating brakes, doors that open when unloading together with dust etc. The TRS2004 versions just wonder round, the loads mysteriously disappear through doors that never open etc.

The TRS2004 versions aren't as robust as the TC3 versions either. Add in another TRS2004 wagon or loco that uses scripts and the two scripts can interfere so suddenly the couplings no longer work or you get an error when you place a wagon on the track.

If its a clean install of TRS2004 and you just add one of my scripted wagons they work as intended. Add someone else's wagon or loco with a script and it could and does just stop working.

All my TRS2004 items will run in TRS2009 native mode and the couplings etc work as intended its just TC3 added a whole lot of enhancements which also happen to work in TRS2009. TRS2009 handles things in a more economical way as well it doesn't demand so much machine resources to do the same thing.

Some TRS2004 items have errors in them that stopped them working correctly in TRS2004. I can think of one tram that is configured for 23 seated passengers but only has 17 seats or attachment points. TRS2009 native mode correctly says if you've told me that this coach can hold 23 visible passengers in the configuration file then you must provide me with 23 seatsbor change the config.txt file to say 17 passengers. TRS2004 just ignored visible passengers because it couldn't figure out what to do and more to the point spent machine resources getting confused when it did it.

There are many other examples.

My comments about a possible SP5 for 04 was a bit of tongue & cheek !!! (04 - SP4 & 06 - SP1 was the end of any devolopment as far as Auran is concerned for those versions).

Why you may ask? Simple, you don't make any money from "Service Packs"
Auran needs to devolope new versions of Trainz's to stay in business. Whether you, I and the rest of the community choose to purchase these new versions will ultimately determine whether Auran stays in business or not.

(I don't imagine it's cheap to run the forum server, the DLS, plus pay the wages of the staff who put the uploads on the DLS & the helpdesk).
Revenue has to come from somewhere to pay for it all !!!!!
If you personally love 04, that's great !!! I enjoyed 04 "in it's day" Now I've moved on to more enjoyable 06, TC3 & 09. (thats not to say everyone has to share the same view). Use whatever version/s you enjoy the most... Just keep in mind what's needed for Auran to stay afloat !!!!
Cheers, Mac... :p

Sorry John TRS2004 is still alive and kicking! I am using TRS2004 for US and Aus routes and TC3 for UK. The reason is that I don't fancy reconfigging a large number of locos for TC3 with limited choice of configs available. Also have TRS2006, although ran with reasonable stabilty on this PC, on previous it did not. Do not use it because of terrible sound. I like using TRS2004 because I can change any route assets quickly using Trainz Objectz, great sound and good stability. As for buying any future versions of TRS Auran can stick them where the sun don't shine!
:hehe:

Mac...must we continue this line of reasoning where we are responsible for Auran's bottom line, future, and very existence? They could have released other packs that people would have paid for, they don't have to release a new version of the game every year.(Unless they have some contract with a distributor or something). Releasing these games when they aren't ready for prime time is what is causing the repeat customers to stop repeating. I have purchased every version of Trainz so far, so that makes me a loyal soldier, but I didn't buy out of loyalty, I bought on the off chance they had gotten rid of the bugs in the LAST version. Fool me six times....shame on me!

Auran is perfectly capable of staying afloat by just releasing a finished product! Why don't they give that one a go?
