Is TRS2004 dying?

Long Live The TRS2004 Resistance!

I hate upgrades. TRS2004 will be around at least until I finish the Bethlehem Steel Shortines.:o

I've have purchased all editions of trainz from the original to 2009, used them all but I still keep going back to 2004 which I find the most satisfying of them all. No Cmp and the sound works ok, though I do think the graphics in 2006, TC and 2009 are superior. I'm still hoping that Auran will update 2004 with the graphic capability of 2009.

 Macka

I let go of TRS4004 when they pry my cold-dead fingers off my copy...!

 ...but I haven't used it in about a year now...

I uninstalled TRS2004 after saving the Downloads Folder on my Back-up hard drive.

I finally learned where to install TRS2006(C:/TRS2006), then everything began to fall into place because I had no more suspensions in time, crashes, etc.

TS2009 RULES, because I installed it into C:/TS2009...I edit like heck, am working on a ton of routes, try to make every asset work, etc.

When you get to work with TS2009, going back to the Legacy versions is like working in Surveyor with half the tools you need...
Going back to TRS2004 would be like reinstalling Windows 95.:hehe:

Hi
I have all versions up to 2006 but will not be using anything other than 2004.
Even if Auran was stupid enough to kill it off, I would be happy with what I have been able to download so far. I definitely would not get 2009 till there are no longer complaints on here about it and I think many more feel the same.
If Auran want to release poor quality versions without proper testing it will remain the same for some time to come.
I dont use UK rolling stock at all, mine are all Aust and US.
I have downloaded more than 2 Gig in the last month.

Long Live 2004
Cheers
Mike

Not on your nellie!

Dear John,
As you know I used 2004 totally for route building until I recently bought TC3.
Unfortunately CMP refuses to work at all, I just get Idle no matter what I have tried.
And in reality Trainz started life as quite a simple yet very effective game, Trainz, I have a copy. It went through UTC (also have that) and then 2004. This version has been extremely stable for a game, no matter what many might say, and I have created 19 routes in it with two more on the go and have rarely had a problem - apart from some assets recently, but that was not the fault of Trainz.
Then something dramatic happened and (as in TC3 etc) Auran went from the simple easy-to-use game to something that needed a spreadsheet/ database or whatever drives CMP. I have to admit I don't understand them and don't like the time consuming fiddle needed to get an asset into the database, even if it worked for me which it doesn't, where it was once a quick couple of clicks.
Building in 2004 means routes are available to a wider audience, apart from Trainz and UTC, so I stick with it and after my struggle to get TC3 working for a week realise I certainly do not want that kind of hassle - life isn't long enough - especially for me!!
The difference is numbers may be caused by the market, that is once 2006 came out with a fanfare of trumpets a lot of folk dashed out and bought it. And now I have TC3 registered I find I can also download 2006 assets, so it seems it isn't just 2006 that is causing the numbers crunch here.
I look at the amount of new assets going onto the DS and note there are still plenty for 2004. If it was in its death throes then that would not be the case, I feel. And even if they stopped appearing I have more than enough to continue producing new routes for as long as I have to ability and inclination.

Don't worry, 2004 is alive and well!!

Blessings,

Angela

Its day is yet to come!

Well kudos to you John for trying to use a documentable statistic to establish a viable trend in Trainz version use, but I think it can't be regarded as a cause and effect relationship until everyone tracks the downloading of their objects and offers up the same results. Even then the numbers are likely to be skewed for one reason or another.

It's certain that 2004 use will decrease over time, then 2006 use, then TC use, 2009 will surely have it's day in the sun. Maybe it will be ready by then.
Say about the time 2011 come out! Of course with more divisions between choices, there will be lower totals, this is only logical. And don't forget the competition will be getting better also! From what I understand, 04 used basics that are make more complicated with required tag additions with every version change since, yet is the root of all these. Now take away the root and you will have no tree! Remember, all things move in cycles (circles). In my opinion, 04 will outlast all the others, just look at how many people are returning to it from the latter versions!

I'm thinking JW just started this thread to plant the seeds of doubt...:hehe: ... but I decided to humor his "effort" to prove it somehow! He and a few other members of the "Big Brain Club" have fully invested in 2009, and are diligently working very hard to improve/fix/promote it. It does have it's charms, I must admit, I'm just not Crainially endowed enough to use it!

You may be waiting for a very long time my friend. Many still complain about 04 and 06 and they are how old now.

The thing is, many creators are making an effort to create for 09 but it isn't coming as easy as it was for previous versions. Myself have dabbled a bit with it but find it very difficult to get things to work right. Take ground textures for example, they look great but are way too large when you place them. A pebble looks like a boulder and that is with the settings at the lowest.

After my dabbling with it, I still prefer to create in 04.

I'd made roughly fifty TRS2004 rolling stock items available in 2009, I have another twenty or so in the pipeline. I'm working with Jontee on making another dozen or so TRS2004 items available as well.

I have one item that needs TRS2009 but my favourite version at the moment is TC3.

My life would be simpler without the TRS2004 side but currently I'm still supporting it.

Cheerio John

Trs2004 had 4 updates and each was an improvement on the previous one.
TRS2006 only had one big update and a lot of items were not fixed.
Sadly when I upgraded to trs2006 script changes caused some items to not work and had to be deleted. Never mind the weeks repairing other assets.

Now I have trs2009 and use trs2006.
I recently reloaded UTC and MSTS and performance was great but detail and terrain was very dated. To convert all maps etc back to Trs2004 is to much PT.

Simpleness

Why, what does TC have over TRS?

Listen to your own words

Convert back... why convert from in the first place if the other versions take way so much. Like the division of 09, I feel 04 should have a division also! Remember the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I know nothing of these other version myself, just what I read here from those that now feel sorry to have left 04.

Now this is my experience so far in Trainz on my machines and OS's.

UTC - Great introduction and replaced my model railroad. Worked well. Removed from machine.

2004 - Improved my experience with added functionality. Worked well. Only thing hated was the long start ups. Discovered SCS2004.
Removed from machine.

2006 - Again greater functionality. Worked faster than 2004 and a little more crash resistant. For me CMP was fantastic. Made finding assets easy. Helped test SCS2006. ( Love it )
Soon to be removed from machine.

2009 - More improvements in tools in surveyor. Works faster than 2006 and with new builds is more stable. Helping develop SCS2009 which improves the experience even more with great scenario ability. Lost some of the items that I liked from before but have to move forward. Look forward to the future.

(does anybody read the info on www.trainzclassics.co.uk?)
Paul

Nope...and nobody uses the search function here either, and I would guess that 40% of members don't use "Google"! Ain't it grand?

JW: I'm sorry now I posted that last bit, I was just having a poke at you with a jest! It's admirable that you are still supporting 2004, and I know your question was a result of your content support chores...:D

Hi

I first got interested in Trainz 13 months ago when I bought both 04 and 06 which were both heavily discounted at the time. Having installed and used both I finally settled on 06 which seemed to run a little better on my computer at the time and I also found CMP easier to use. When TC3 came out I bought that and have found it very stable since the patch and far more realistic for me as my main interest is BR in the late 50s and 60s. With a little bit of work I was able to convert most of the earlier locos to work properly in TC3 and have had a great deal of pleasure from doing so.

When 09 came out I too read all the negative posts on the websites and held off buying because of them. However I decided to buy it when the latest patch came out and have been delighted with it since. I have transferred the TC3 content into it and I am getting much improved framerates running in compatability mode. There are some problems with it but nowhere near as many as I was led to believe from reading the forums.

Perhaps it is the way that you use the program that depends whether you are happy with it or not. I cannot create content and I don't particularly like driving myself so I get my pleasure from writing scenarios using SCS2006. Thus some of the problems that are mentioned perhaps don't show up for me.

I think that I have adapted to the new versions more easily because I never really invested a great deal of time and effort into the earlier games. Once I started using TC3 I too felt as though the earlier games were a step back in time. It may be that the stats that John is seeing reflect the number of people like myself who are just discovering Trainz and are using the newer versions in preference to the older ones.

The main thing is that you get pleasure from this hobby irrespective of which version that you use and my pleasure has increased considerably since running TC3 in 09.

Regards

Brian
