I have a route map as a JPG image is it possible to import this into trainz - can i turn the map into another graphic format if needed would make setting up the route in trainz real easy if i could just trace the map

thanks

I use basemaps for that. You can go to this link here...
http://www.g0akh.f2s.com/Trainz/Basemap_tutorial.html
and get them either directly or through the DLS link.
It also gives full directions on how to use them.
The 1km basemap is a 1km square with a default texture on the top surface. You have to crop your map into 1km and resize the squares to 1024x1024, then save them as the basemap texture. Lay them down, trace the texture and then delete them when you're done.
Precision cropping is desirable, but with a little practice you can get close enough that the errors in sizing are unnoticable in the finished route. I did a 35 KM loop, starting on one side and working around to meet on the far side, and the last two tiles matched within 20 meters.
The only real problem is that the grab point is the upper left corner, so you sometimes have to add an extra base board to be deleted later or rotate the image to bring the grab point closer to the center line of the layout.
Overall, I really like these, and use them all the time.

 Claude

The only real problem I found with the basemaps is remembering to switch on wireframe mode before moving any scenery objects placed in the map, if you don't grab the object correctly you 'knock' the underlying basemap out of alignment.
I rotated the pic 180 when editing so I would be grabbing the lower right edge in surveyor, just made it easier for me. Also I put reference numbers in the corners of the map to keep track of where you are in the limited view in surveyor.

Dave,
These base maps to which Claude is referring are excellenent for assigning UBD or Street Directory maps to, at the correct scale of course. UBD on disk is even better! If you have purchased them.

Cheers

Yes, they work quite well, here is the individual jpg's linked together for my ongoing project, it would be much too big to show a complete surveyor screenshot of all the basemaps

these images were scanned from a Perly's large print map book
There is some overlapping though.

Hi,

Has anyone successfully set up more than the nine basemaps?.
I have an area covering 70 1km-square boards .
For this I would need to make up say 55-60 basemaps.
Can I use aliasing?, & how please (I've not done this before).

The 70 1km-square 'maps' are all accurately sized & ready to transpose onto basemaps, but I'm not sure how to have more than the nine supplied.

They will be used in groups of four to nine, then I move on to another area,
where I use the next group of basemaps.
I will be removing the previous group of basemaps as I go, but need to keep them for
future referral use.
ie I will do a rough layout first, then will need them again for the more finer detailing.

Hi Noel,

As you can see in my screenshot I have got 11 basemaps set up, they do get a bit awkward the more you have in terms of positioning, maneuvering, etc.
Not sure about aliasing, but you can give the extra basemaps new kuid #s and user names to make them usable.
