I'm pretty sure you will have a problem with that since 2006 was the first trainz to start using the 'local' directory and Auran Asset Database, TRS04 did not (Used 'World/Download')

But could be wrong

CDP's will install into either TRS2004 or TRS2006 but if both versions of Trainz are installed on the same computer then you have to switch between them as follows.

To make CDP's install into TRS2004:
  1. Go to the C:\Program Files\Auran\TRS2004\Bin\ folder and launch TrainzHelper.exe.
  2. Click on the Trainz Product and change it to TRS 2004 (23xx) where xx can be any two digits.
  3. Click on Save.
It may be desirable to create a shortcut for Trainz Download Helper (TDH) on your desktop.

To make CDP's install into TRS2006, launch CMP by clicking on the TRS2006 shortcut and clicking on Manage Content. There's no need to do anything else.

You can switch back and forth whenever you wish.

Whether the assets inside the CDP are compatible with each version of Trainz is a separate issue.

I'm not sure what the situation is with CDP2 files.

Hi ,
it can be done much easier ;
rightclick on the CPD and chose "open with"
then you get the choise :
1) content dispatcher ( 2004 )
2) content manager plus ( 2006 )

Check that the missing dependencies are really on your system. In CMP they will be listed with yellow ? thingies. Sometimes they contain other missing items that are broken, and this will cause the original not to load. You need to repair the broken ones in order to make them all work. If in fact the item is really missing, you can then check the DLS manually.

To check the DLS for missing items, go to the DLS via the Auran website link and then click on the appropriate version of Trainz you want to search for. In this case, you need to check the boxes for TRS2004, and earlier version.

With the checkmarks on these versions, you can then search the KUID numbers, and most likely fine the items you are missing. All there nieeds to be missing is a horn or engine file, and the train may or may not load.

The process can takes some time, but it goes pretty quickly

If the engines (or any other assets worked in '04 then all the files you need are in the ...\World\dispatcher\Downloads folder.

'06 will tell you the KUID's of the missing assets. Look in the '04 folder for the matching folders and copy them to a temporary transfer folder - then tell '06 to import the transfer folder. If you have only ever downloaded a few hundred or so assets you can just import the ...\World\dispatcher\Downloads folder directly which will give you everything you had in '04.

Not all of it will work though - '06 is not fully upward compatible.
