Is the download station just somebodys laptop

Fair comment, but I speak my mind.
If I didn't think it needed saying then I wouldn't say it.

I've never been one to "Auran bash" for the sake of it, and back in the day you will have seen me promoting Trainz with as much gusto as any man on here.
That was because those days, even if Trainz wasn't perfect and needed a lot of work done on it, we knew that Auran were dedicated to it, and were trying their best with the limited resources they had.
One thing you will never see me doing is cheering or slating Auran blindly.
There are people on these forums who belong to one of the two groups, and I dislike both equally. lol
People should never "blindly" do anything.

These days, the effort only seems to be there when they have something new to sell us.

So, if you see me seemingly having a go at Auran again, maybe you'll see the bigger picture and realise that it's simply because I think they are falling short of what they were, and what they could be (IMO), and not a mindless rant at the first thing that goes wrong (there are plenty of people who do that, I'll grant you).

As I've said once already this week, I think Auran have done a great job with TS2010, but after all that hard work on the software, the PR and community side of things is shocking.

If only half of Auran's staff were to spend 5 minutes of their lunch-hour once per week on these boards, then a lot of people would have a lot more faith in the product and them.
Don't tell me that's too much to ask.

Personally, I think they're under strict instructions not to, and this has been the way since ********* took over.
Is this an improvement?
Not in my opinion.

Anyway, in this instance, the Download Station is playing up for some people, and when I looked yesterday, there wasn't a lot of new content on the DS since the Christmas closedown, even though I know there are several people waiting on their assets being cleared.

Maybe I've just missed the posts from Auran staff, joining in conversations on the subject, and reassuring them that it is being dealt with. :hehe:

Smiley.

Smiley for president!!!

Auran's customer service and PR statues, these days simply suck!:'(

I have found that the DLS is slow on evening (UK Time) and much faster on a morning. I'm presuming that because I have 50 MG broadband speed, its more of a bandwidth problem with the DLS.

And to be honest, as i've been using the DLS now for 9 years and I just accept its faults and try at another time. It then usually works fine.

I have found that if I need just one or two items and the DLS is having one of its moments, I find the FTP way to download nearly always ok. But this is doing it the long way.

My only gripe with the DLS is lack of new content for 2009 and thats not just down to auran.

I'm a Trainzer from 2004 on up to 2010, with an active First Class Ticket every year. The CMP has not been able to get me a server port in 2 weeks. Constant "Server Appears To Be Full" messages. I've tried all the old tricks for re-aligning CMP. Nothing works.

(OK I do sleep at night and don't try then), but it's really frustrating. :(

To nestfilms:

Have you tried downloading with either of the 3rd party download utilities, Trainz Downloader Pro or Trainz Agent?

Apart from the few times when the server has totally crashed, I have always been able to access it and download at full speed. Even in the 'good times' when nobody's complaining about DLS access, I find those utilities better/faster than Auran's Download "Helper" (and I never use CMP etc).

I don't know if I'm just lucky or if it's these 3rd party utilities (I happen to use Trainz Agent). So at least give them a try before you give up. They are both freeware, so you have nothing to lose other than the time needed to set them up.

This site has links to both programs I believe;

The reference to my info regarding modem was an attempt to throw light on the original problem - the reason my DLS now works because of the change of modem is as much a mystery to me as obviously to you.
After changing to the DLink modem and finding the DLS operating without flaw I (without altering anything else) reconnected the original Speedstream modem and it showed in the window that it was downloading (as before) but in fact did not do so - reverting to the DLink and everything is fine.
Just something to try when all else fails.

Ron,

I had a similar issue not with the DLS, but with another website I was required to connect to. I was attending online classes, and for the life of me I could not get the connection to work. I would connect in, the site would tell me I was connected, etc. but my connection would be dropped immediately.

Since I am one here that handles hardware upgrades, I happened to check for any updates to an old BayNetworks router I had. I flashed the ROM for it, and my online connection worked fine.

To this day I have no idea what kind of fix that made because all of my other connections were fine. The only difference I noticed was better performance overall, so who knows.

Hey

Whenever I try to download something, like one of VinnyBarbs AN Class, the first time it will work, the next, it wont. Do I need to download the assets first or do not press stop to try and improve th speed????

Thanks, SARRailways

So...do you...?

 Have Internet Options/Security/Trusted Sites configured to allow Auran?

What is your security setting?

How many background apps do you have running?

Is your Security Firewall set to allow Auran Trainz.exe?

My sure fired answer to this was to place all Trainz versions on my Local Drive each in it's own folder:
  • C:/TRS2004
  • C:/TRS2006
  • C:/TS2009
  • C:/PaintShed
This practically eliminated all waiting for any app including CCP, CMP & CMv2.

I use the Download Station with no problems downloading.

I typically have no problems with the DLS. It was a little bugged out over the holidays, but that's to be expected. I have also heard others having issues uploading stuff, though.

The title of this thread did crack me up, I must admit.

Cheers for that insight Ed, and here's me thinking a "Death Knoll" was a "Burial Mound". Stupid or what??:hehe:

AC/DC...

 It's the bell you hear at the beginning of the song "Hell's Bells."

The (Church) bell used to "peal" a long series of rings to announce someone died...or was married...or born...the signal varies with the timing of the ring.

The church sexton(attendant) wrang a single, largest bell with a pause, until it was heard by all the community.

And...nobody played guitar...

This cracked me up too! What is a "death knoll" exactly?

A bell will knell, if rung slowly...:hehe:

Hey, I'm sorry the old Parky fingers got confused. At least I usually catch most of my typos. :o

It's the slow ringing of the bell...

Joe,

I won't laugh too loudly. These were new computers back when I was a technician in the old days. I still have my Visual Commuter with two floppy drives. My old Visual V-1050 had the capability of reading the Osbourne and Kaypro disks so I was able to muster up quite a collection of software.

A Comuter Computer here... 100% IBM compatible because it could run MS Flight Simulator!

You say you still have your Visual Commuter with two floppy drives, blimey that must be worth something now, I never checked to see how much these would be worth today, but if it's in top condition, you probably get something for it, maybe Auran might buy it to upgrade the speed on the DLS...

By the way my first computer was an amstrad with tapes. Not exactly a laptop, but it was as fast as one...

I was wondering should I donate this to Auran...
