interlocking question (08)

I think I understand the concept of using interlocking switches (08 interlocking) but I cant seem to find a good write up of when and how to place them. For instance what is the difference between a searchlight 08 and an 08 interlocking? Is there something magical behind the scenes to make the interlocking switches talk to each other? Normally I just use 06's and 04's but there are a couple places where interlocking 08's would seem to work better for me but its hard to get a good understanding of "how". Leaving a mainline entering a yard area where there are a multitude of upcoming diverges, Id just as soon use an 08 with speed controls then just 06's. Thanks in advance.

I think Justin will be able to answer your question in much more detail, but until he shows up here I'll try and tell you how I use them... I use the 08 signals at crossovers or areas where there may be more than one path, for instance at a juction where 2 double tracks diverge. Most of the signals above 04 you need to actually set up and tell it what the straight path is. Once it knows what you consider to be the straight route it will figure the rest out. Again Justin is much more involved in the inner workings of our smart signals so he should pop in here soon and explain it in better detail.

Thanks

Mike
