Wow and I had to do that by hand rebuilding switches out of Golden BC thirty years ago straight out of high school. I watch a rail gang go by when I was kid in Canoe BC, a lot of men working doing it by hand.
When I was six a friend and I made friends with the young man working in the little station house in Canoe, he showed us the workings of the station, the telegraph, changing the semaphore, Mail pickup on the fly, and the loop sticks he used to pass on messages. It was great for a youngster to see the old GPs fly by as we stood next to him as he did his job.
Next year they closed the station down and put in automatic lights controlled out of Kamloops.
It is not until now that as I look back what an gift he give me as an youngster, an look at the past very few of my generation would ever see.
