I posted this originally on the DHR forum but I don't think many people visit over there for general matters so repeat posting here...
Just wondered how the team sourced topographic maps for the DHR project? After reading some of the trip reports on IRCFA I have been bitten by the Indian railway bug and started work on my own route, a very freelanced version of the NE Frontier Railway from Lumding to Badarpur. However in sourcing maps to use with Transdem, the best I could find are either the Russian 1:200000 series, which vary in quality and of course require some guesswork as to the place names, or the 1950's US military 1:250000 series which are even worse in terms of detail clarity.
With maps at this scale, even being off by a pixel or two in placement means 200 to 300m off in sim relative to the DEM and I have been adapting as I go.
My attempt to locate 1:50000 maps proved fruitless and there's no scrollable map server for India (that I could find) as there is for France, Ireland and Norway etc. which enables a map to be built up in Paint Shop Pro from screen dumps. I gather the Indians are a bit parochial about the maps over security concerns but even something at 1:100000 would be better than the current selection!
