When I was active in Flight sims, there were a couple of programs that you could run prior to starting up the sim, that would terminate anything that was not needed to properly run the sim. These programs were tricky to configure, because you might disable something that was necessary to be running, so some trial and error was the rule. Shutting down unnecessary operations on the computer would usually result in smoother operation of the sim plus improvement in frame rates.
I was browsing around this week and read about Game Booster which is a free program. I downloaded it and saw that it was a very much improved type of program from what I used years ago. Must of the configuration is automatic, and you can go though the options of selecting what you want to shut down. You can also add Trainz or any other game to the opening menu, and to start that game, you click on the Icon that is created when you add the game, it automatically turns off all the background programs you don't need and then starts the game. The only thing that I didn't like was that it changed the resolution on Trainz to a slightly lower resolution, but it was a simple matter to go into the options on Trainz, and set the resolution back to what it had been, and it will stay that way then. Once you end the game, the program returns all the programs it shut down, to active status again automatically.
I was already getting good frame rates on my rig, but it dense areas, I can see that this program did make a noticeable improvement in the smoothness in graphically demanding scenery. Might be worth a try, since it is free, to see if you gain anything on your system.
