I have used trs2004 for a longgg time, just moved to TANE. I have a route I would like to import. I recognize all new features of TANE, so I only want to import the topology as years of research went into the topography of this prototype route. 1. Can this be done? if so how? manual doesnt really provide clarity on importing from old versions. thanks

Yes it is possible. The easiest way is to use TS12. Import into that open and save the route in Surveyor. Fix all errors and note the warnings. Then import from TS12 into TANE.

If you don't have TS12 then you can manually edit the mapfile filenames and try it that way. I'd suggest making a backup copy stored safely away before trying. TS12 does this by the way, and it keeps the old files in the same folder and renames the copies it makes.

Import the route into TANE. Open the asset for editing and show in explorer.
I'll use an example I just worked on a few days ago. Here's what the folder contents looked like after importing:

config.txt
mack, co.bmk
mack, co.gnd
mack, co.obj
mack, co.trk

I just copy and pasted all the "mack, co" files and renamed them to "mapfile" keeping the file extensions intact.
If you have a backup copy you can just rename them. Here's the folder after:

config.txt
mack, co.bmk
mack, co.gnd
mack, co.obj
mack, co.trk
mapfile.bmk
mapfile.gnd
mapfile.obj
mapfile.trk

I suggest you don't change the config.txt file at this point.
Submit the open asset and see what errors/warnings and missing dependensies are noted.
Ignore warnings for now and fix up any errors.

Try opening it in Surveyor and see what shows.

I had some problems with this route. It's a terrain only route from TRS04 [edit: it's actually a version 10 gnd file format which is from UTC - this is the format version used by HOG] but none of the ground textures showed on the terrain. The mapview showed them if I zoomed out enough but that's no help for laying track and other things. Anyhow I'm looking to find a fix for that. I also noted a problem with terrain heights along 1 edge of a baseboard(s) at one end of the route. That's a manual fix in Surveyor so not a real problem. The rest appears to have come thru intact and ready to use. I've done other routes from newer versions following the above and they came thru with no problems.

Good luck,
Bob Pearson

Moving on with TANE

As I am building a prototype the Columbia and Western RR in 1901, I will take this opportunity to call TRS2004 C&W Version 1. I have continued to find additional information on the prototype which I will apply to TANE and will build the C&W Verison 2.

The improvement to Surveyor improve a lot of workaorund I had to do in 2004.
