Good morning all.

I need a person that can give an old timer instructions to move my 2010 version of trainz to my external hard drive, to free up some space on my C-drive.
Can anyone help me out?

Thanks,:)
Bob

A re-install will probably be needed. Some of the changes would have to be done in the Registry, and some of the data may be stored elsewhere. Also, if you move it without reinstalling, you will find that you will not be able to uninstall it in the future if required.

Ok Thanks Shane

That is what I feared the most:hehe:
So I'm not going to fix what is not broken!!
I will move something else and save myself a lot of work.
I am getting wiser as I get older.

There has got to be several file loactions where all the 2010 assets and routes are. Which can be copied and pasted into the new re-installation.

In TRS2006 the "Local" file is the only thing you copy and paste into the re-installation ... but I hear that 2010 is much altogether different process with an "Original" folder and possibly other files that also need copying.

This is without doubt your best course of action.

The most effective things to move (if you have any) are usually all the items in your "Pictures" folders (usually .jpg files) - all those family photos etc. can take up a lot of space, also look at any music files.

Just be careful not to move any Trainz graphics files though!!

And a Windows disc cleanup may well free up disc space on C: drive. If you need more detail on doing this post again with your Windows OS version.

Cheers

Bob I just back up the folder to an external HD, my folder is called "Auran", as I have a number of versions loaded, together with lots of other information relating to Trainz and my project which I am trying to develop.
I have ran 2010 from the back up copy on the External HD OK.
I actually use this HD 1Tb to back up my computer employing a program called "Acronis True Image Home".

Thanks for the advice guys.

I do have a lot of photos that I could transfer to the external drive.
I'll do that first and then move my music files over.
I'm running Windows 7 you know the one that hides each window under the one you are working from. I really don't like windows 7 yet.
I'll let you know what trouble I get myself into:D later.

You can run Trainz from anywhere (at least 2009/2010) without any trouble, it even keeps your license keys and works on another computer as long as all the files are in the same place (the TS2009/TS2010 folder).

Yes but this will not help with the OPs problem which was:

.......instructions to move my 2010 version of trainz to my external hard drive, to free up some space on my C-drive.....

What OS? If it is XP then just use explorer's move command to move the whole Trainz folder, and make a shortcut to Trainz.exe wherever it was moved to. Or copy instead of move and then uninstall to clean up the registry.

I don't know about that... I'm thinking there would be items in the registry that need to be updated to the new location. I counted 17 entries in my registry that point to my installation folder for Trainz. I'm sure some of them must be somewhat important... :D

Just my 2 cents..

That is correct - there are some very important registry entries for Trainz, including the one that allows downloading using CMP from the web-based system.

Also, if something goes wrong with the moved version, you will not be able to uninstall it.

It's not a good idea to have Trainz and personal files like fotos on the same partition as your operating system. If something goes wrong and you have to reinstall the OS, you'll loose everything, unless you can put your drive in another PC and rescue files, or use some rescue tool.
Ideally, you should have the OS on your C drive, and Trainz (and any other game) on a second partition like D.
Moving Trainz to another partition on the same drive or a new one should be no problem as long as you keep the same drive letter for the new partition/drive.

Examples:

Current setup:
-OS on C
-Trainz on D

Adding a new drive:
-OS on C (old drive)
-Move Trainz from D (old drive) to new drive E (might be any letter asigned by the OS)
-Swap drive letters (here's a link on how to proceed, it's easy to do: http://www.itechtalk.com/thread3400.html)
-So, rename E to D (of course everything installed on old D should be moved or reinstalled in new D)

Trainz (and any software) only cares about finding the path it had when installed.

Also, i don't recommend installing Trainz on an external (USB) drive, it will take quite some time to load, and you'll have loads of stuttering in-game.

The only registry entries are to make cdp, cdp2, and cmpa files, and the trainz:// protocol open with CMP, the uninstall info, and the info for the patcher. The info that the patcher needs is created when Trainz starts up, so is not a problem, the uninstall info is not required and you can open cdp etc from CMP. I have TS09 running from a usb HD and it works great. If something goes wrong you can just delete the folder Trainz is in and start again.

...drag & drop...

 I did a reinstall of Windows Vista this week to resolve an issue with Media Center...everything worked out OK.:D

I just used drag & drop to place TS2009 into a folder on my external called Alpha Backup 9-10-10.:p

I found I could run the program including Content Manager.:hehe:

I moved the entire thing back to C:\TS2009:sleep:

Running the program, I find only a sound issue(rotational to the locomotive).

I checked the registry, Windows made folders for Auran.:)

I did try to reinstall TS2009, then add TS2010, everything stopped after the service pack failed...:(

I went to the original TS2009 installation.

I don't approve that method....yet.

If you have too much stuff on your original hard drive, you have too much stuff!

You need to spend about a hundred-dollars & get a(or another) external hard drive & move all those photos, videos, archives, etc to that location.;)

Leave your internal drive to your active programs!
