Hurricane Sandy

When buying a house, make sure you are 30' above the highest flood plane.

When buying a house, check to see if it is in tornado alley.

When buying a house, make sure that the city is not behind an aging system of Levey's, and is not built 12' below sea level.

If you have a basement in Atlantic City NJ (which is 14' above sea level) consider relocating your heater, TV's, and furniture to the second story level of the house, everytime a cataclysmic storm is approaching.

Recently 12 mile wide iceberg broke off of Greenland, and it is afloat. If a huge global ice melt occurred, this could be the future topography of the land:

When you see a tree down, it most likely took down a 13.2 Kv power line, do not touch !

Harbor Freight chain saws can be dangerous, if you are not a lumberjack, don't try to be one, one weekday out of the year.

If we all lived in a "safe" place, where would that be exactly? Barring any natural disasters, the City of Chicago has had more than 14000 residents die since 1990, over 433 this year alone. I can imagine all the world's population huddled in one spot on the planet, and can only surmise this would make the perfect target for an asteroid impact!

BTW: all chain saws are dangerous!;)

I'm on the Western side of the state, about one block from the Delaware River which is expected to over it's banks in this area. My first floor is about five higher than the road surface so if it gets that high then my entire community is in serious trouble. I'm more concerned about the rain amounts than the wind. I don't need a cellar full of water, if the power goes out. That means a new heater, hot water heater, washer, drier and freezer.

That's about where my family lives too, but about a 1/2 mile from the river. I hope you made it through okay. The shore got pummeled, and the Northern towns got the run off from NY, but I don't know about the damage in the rest of the state.

I spent 36 hours with someone in the house, with a TV news blaring, listening to TV reporters that have some Community College education. One reporter said: "If you have no power, you can start a fire in your house, just so long as you can do it safely", (never mind the Carbon Monoxide and smoke).:o I put my portable gasoline generator right in the bedroom, where it won't get stolen, and the exhaust muffler will keep us warm (for a short while).

I retrofitted my TV to run on a 20 lb tank of propane, now I will never lose power !

Even here in South Africa the weather is affected, we have high winds and heavy rains all over for three weeks already .
Hope you guys in the much closer areas are ok.
The weather are definately changing pattern worldwide, I wonder what age this is going to be called in a thousand years time .

It's a fluke. Weather does what it does, if you want to believe we have any control over it (like those that claim that HAARP made the hurricane) then I guess we should call it the "Age of Hubris".

We've been having lovely weather down here, about 80-90 F I think. Poor buggers that died.

But how come there's so little coverage of everyone else effected? I heard another 40+ people died further south not in America...

It's partly because the news media is centered in the US in NY and Washington. You'll notice there are probably more stories released about NYC than Maryland. The news outlets tend to be quite egocentric, so "oh my gosh...NYC!" is more important than other cities to them, and so they believe to the rest of the US and hence the world. Now, if they are that egocentric about NYC compared to another American city, of course they are going to regard lives lost in other countries as even less important.

It's also partly because the news media tends to be quite liberal, and they are trying to boost the image of our President before the election, so they can dramatize the events of Sandy to turn it into a huge monster, slayed by their messiah with a mere speech. Contrast that with the smear campaign they painted on the Katrina event, when anyone who lives here knows that state governors make the decisions when dealing with natural disasters, not presidents.

Don't assume that Americans only care for their own, and I truly hope you aren't trying to subtly imply that. What the world sees of the US is mainly what the US news media broadcasts, and to properly parse that material you need to understand the bulk of those in the industry, and understand their motivations. America has a history of supplying aid to other nations, and helping those in need.

It's natural to focus attention on your own nation more so than others, the news media is primarily for the consumption of each nation's own populous after all. I'm sure it's no different in Australia, but Australia is not the target of the rest of the world, is it?

A few links here are for a local news site, it may take a bit for the site to load, something to do with the site design.

A photo gallery from a couple of shores including spots near the east shore by the railway.

A 168 foot water tanker was moored about a mile off the east shore, now one-third on the shoreline, short video at link.

A rough look at the borough.

Power went out again at 9PM while defragging, came back about 1 AM. I think it is part of some emergency procedure power companies use during emergencies to avoid overloads.
This is for anyone live in the Philadelphia area. Do yall think the school will open tomorow 10/31/2012. And NYC subway will be down for days if not weeks
True, Chairman and CEO Joseph J. Lhota said after they pump all the tunnels, they have to check all switches for replacements plus other work, I recall hearing at least one yard was flooded though I forget which one. At least they put all the railcars on high ground for protection.

I'm pretty sure the power companies shut down power to the subways in NYC in advance of the storm surge to prevent damage to equipment. I wouldn't like to be the worker that has to open all those cabinets and stand there with a blow dryer for half an hour though!

Takes more than drying the salt water on the electrical equipment to get everything back to working order.

To our friends across the pond, are thoughts and prayers go out to you. And we hope the future will be brighter for you

May be they can use this time to clean out all the rats that live in the subway tunnels! :)

Seriously though, I'm sure this will be quite an issue because of the corrosion.

Sadly, developers and realestate agents love to sell houses out in the woods. With ever increasing populations, and now marginal land going on sale for development, we now have more and more people living in areas that shouldn't have been built on in the first place. What I don't have sympathy for are those that build right on the coastline. Those sandy barrier islands never were permanent and never will be. They change their shape and size with the ever changing water patterns due to floods, droughts, and storms. A classic example of a barrier beach is Plum Island located in Newbury and Ipswich MA. This landscape has changed considerable since it was first built on in the 1860s. The Joppa flats have filled in more in some areas, while others are more open. Recently, in the past few years, the tides have changed and have actually eroded more of the beach causing houses to wash away. A similar issue has taken place down in Chatham, MA on Cape Cod. This too is a barrier beach, which forms a big part of the heal on Cape Cod. As this beach as washed away, taking houses with it, the US Army Corps of Engineers has refused to allow building there again.

We have to remember too that it's the same developers and realestate agents that tell people that those railroad tracks are abandoned. Only later on does the landowner find out that they are active (rarely), or are slated to become an active main line once again.

The weather are definitely changing pattern worldwide, I wonder what age this is going to be called in a thousand years time .

This storm was nothing, compared to the storm of 1931, where Wildwood NJ was wiped off the face of the Earth, and only sidwalks, concrete steps, and driveways remained, buried under 12' of washed up sand. Parts of Central Pennsylvania were so badly flooded by the Juniata River, that entire mountainsides washed away in landslides.

The only reason why, the hubub and frenzey is fueled by the TV newscasters, in this day and age is more publicized is because we now have Facebook, and the internet now broadcasts live video of weather happenings.

If you look back in time the weather in the 1700's-1900's was worse than it is today, with more devastating storms. Now days the reporters get the public all worked up in a frenzy over a 2" Frankensnow Blizzard, making the public expect a deluge.

A thousand years from now they will call this the "Age of Woosy Weather", that the woos'es got their panties all wadded up in a bunch, worrying about some cataclysmic Storm that fizzled out once again, due to over reacting psychotic TV news reporters.

Back in the early to late 1900's there were more frequent and more devastating volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and storms, than today ! Superstorm blizzards regularly cripled the North East US with 24' snowdrifts from Wash DC, to NYC.

Just wait until the 23 volcano's erupt in Alaska, and the Earths other 1500 volcano's erupt, from Seattle to Peru, and the Yellowstone Magma Calderon blows, along with when all along the Pacific "Rim of Fire" tectonic plates shift, then you will see a cataclysm to talk about.

Ed: You echo my sentiments

Why are my parents and I lucky to have electricity and no damage to my house and my sister and her husband not lucky to have electricity and their house is flooded? A tree fell on a house across my backyard. I feel bad for people who lost their homes.
