Hurricane Sandy

Atlantic City Mayor defies NJ Governor Chris Christie's manditory order to evacuate. Now a large number of Atlantic City resideints are trapped in a flooded High School shelter 2 blocks from the ocean. The Governor says that the will have to ride out the Hurricane inside the flooded school shelter, and that rescues will not be provided, as they defied a State order to evacuate.

It was stupid of the mayor to defy the State evacuation order. And it was even more stupid for the residents of Atlantic City to trust their mayor. As we see here in this example, two dumbs don't make a bright.

Hey everyone,

I am without power in Philadelphia PA. Wind took down a couple of poles not far from my house; It's gonna be a long night...

Sorry I couldn't talk much now; I'm typing from my phone. Hope everybody stays safe.

So far it hasn't been to bad here in northeastern PA. The rain has been mostly light with occasional gust of wind. Power is still on.

Looks like the damage to the New York City Subway system will be catastrophic, with salt water that has flooded the tunnels and stations.

Flooding over the MTA system. Shown in pictures of subway station, some stations are flooded almost to platform level with a lot of trash in the water.

Flooding in various areas including Manhattan mainly below the 20s streets. Supposedly a record high storm surge set in lower Manhattan between 13-14 feet, average across the 5 boroughs was 7-10 feet. A lot of streets across the area showing various levels of flooding. Still more high tide coming but only 3-4 feet above normal.

Front of a 4 story building in Manhattan removed, you could see right into the apartments.

Queens-Midtown and Brooklyn Battery Tunnels flooded.

Power out in several spots. Here, power blinked three times before 9:30PM when it went out for a few hours so I went to bed early with nothing else to do, I decided to shut off the computer by 8:30.

Stock exchange closed 2 days in a row, first time since 1888.

Comparisons already being made between Irene and Sandy, while Irene was stronger, Sandy had a larger area of effect.

A photo gallery with pictures from Maine down to North Carolina including a couple of shots from the snow effect in West Virginia and western Virginia, at the end is a flood shot of the Lackawanna station in Hoboken, NJ.

I read that effects of Sandy will reach even as far west as Chicago still where they expect winds up to 60mph and waves up to 24 feet.

Hi Thai1On:

A few did but generally speaking folks just have enough long power extension cables to run around thier own house. If houses are really close together (zero-lot-line developments) it was more likely to happen. Most portable generators arte 6500 watts or less. Some folks of course have permanently installed all house generators. They almost certainly have extra capacity and could help a neighbor or two. Just a line to the refrigerator would be a great help otherwise they might lose many hundereds of $$$ worth of food. You only BBQ so mjuch, lol. One of my neighbors is in construction and has a gigantic welder (diesel driven). He runs his entire house off of it when the power goes bye bye.

Keep in mind during the actual passage emergency services won't venture out for the same reason school busses aren't allowed on the roads. Ambulances are also high profile vehicles (fire trucks not as much). One overturned ambulance can't help anyone during the actual storm or afterwards either for that matter. Better to wait it out then help multiple people afterwards. You really are on your own during the centers passage. Best to be prepared.

Hope things turn out for the good for all in Sandys area.

Wow! What a night! My electric faded a few times, but never went completely out. The wind was unbelievable. During the height (8 - 10 PM), I kept seeing light flashes all around in the skies. I thought it was lightning, but I'm sure it was electric lines coming down. SEPTA is not running regional rail today yet and I haven't seen any CSX trains yesterday or today. It will be a while until things are back to normal.

Subway system flooding? Touching that water would be like throwing a hairdryer in a bathtub......
I hope everyone remains safe...

I'm sad to see and hear of the devastation along the east coast and as far north and west as Toronto. We were lucky with only a few branches down and a few flickers during the night. By the time I went to sleep at 1:30 am, the moon was poking through the clouds and everything was so quiet it and eerily spooky.

In Breezy Point, Queens, over 50 homes were destroyed in a fire.

Found a picture of Metro-North tracks south of Cold Springs station, a large tree fell over the tracks.

A boat washed onto LIRR tracks.

In one neighborhood here, people had their cars flooded now some cannot find thier cars. Others refused to leave their homes in flood zones, now they are trapped because too much water prevents opening doors, others cannot get home.

Tanker cars washed off rail tracks onto the NJ Turnpike though it is said the bogies are still on rails, not sure what the contents are.

I'm pretty sure the power companies shut down power to the subways in NYC in advance of the storm surge to prevent damage to equipment. I wouldn't like to be the worker that has to open all those cabinets and stand there with a blow dryer for half an hour though!

This is for anyone live in the Philadelphia area. Do yall think the school will open tomorow 10/31/2012. And NYC subway will be down for days if not weeks

They should open the schools.

Back in my time we had to slosh through hurricanes walking 20 miles to school uphill in both directions, all while fighting off Indians. And don't even get me started on pestilence and famine.
