Hump Yard Grades

I agree with the 5 MPH max. Possibly even a little less.

Remember your high school physics? Kinetic energy equals 1/2 mass times velocity squared. Doubling the (down) grade quadruples the energy required to slow or stop the cars.

I can hump at 1mph, no stopping, down a 3% grade with 2 sets of retarders one at each track to slow the cars and 3/4 at the end to stop the car. I use the T12 hump track that will auto uncouple at the Hump Crest. Never had a run thru.

I could never get the retarders working in TRS2006, so if you try my route below, you will see that my hump is an extremely shallow grade, and is not very long at all ... and the coasting track is like a mile long, with a gradient of @ 0.002%, and I used a slight kickback at the yard exit (at one time).
