How to uninstall Trainz 2006 and reinstall

Hi there,

So, I don't want to sound like a complete idiot and I have searched the forums and can't find an answer. I am not stupid when it comes to computers but I am stumped.

I keep getting a blue screen error (crash) on my XP program (have SP3 from microsoft).

I ran diagnostic and it seemed to fix the crashing problem, but what I want to do now is a clean install of Trainz2006. But, if I go and look at my "add/remove programs" it does not show up so can't do it that way. So, thought I would just go into the program files and delete the Auran folder (did a back up of my son's files first as he has worked so hard on Thomas Island of Sodor), but when I try to dump this file in the trash, I get told "that another user or program is using this" and won't let me continue.

I thought that there might be an uninstall section of the DVD that I have, but all it does is give me the choice to ONLY install the program which, if I do, hangs up at the very end.

Thought it might be an SP1 issue and tried to install from my disk and also downloaded it, but it tells me that there is already a file but won't rename and won't let me continue.

As I said, I am stumped!!! Can anyone help me.:'(

Hi Karen

1. First thing I have to ask is how much content have you downloaded from DLS? if none or don't want to backup goto step 4

2. If you have content will the program still let you into CMP?, if so use the arcive option in the manually to backup your content you have downloaded.

3. If you can't get into used a backup program or copy the local directory from 2006 to somewhere else for safety

4. you can now goto control panel and use the remove program items to remove TRS2006 completely

5. Once done reinstall 2006 and SP1

6. if you did 2 go into CMP and reintall all your content

7. if you did 3 copy back the local directory, there is 2 cache files you need to delete to cause the program to rebuild the cache for all your content but can't rember what they are, ask help desk?

Hi,

This may sound like the obvious (I hope it is!)

1) You've saved all the custom content - so you cab just delete the folder

2) Re-boot - sometime the TRS launcher will appear to die, but have some component running in the background.

3) Use task manager to check that there isn't a hidden process accessing the files (launcher - possibly system if ti compresses files...)

4) Delete the sub-folders (you may need to change from read-only)
I've found that often I can't change the top folder properties until the sub-folders are deleted.

5) Use REGEDIT to remove all the traces of AURAN (see the Trainz Classics web site - it talks about TC 1 & TC2 - but the instructions are good).

6) Now re-install and add SP1 (before running).

Seems silly to ask, but isn't a program's "uninstall" program supposed to do all of this for you? Seems odd to put one in there and still have to go in behind it with a mop and broom. :mop:

Uninstalled and reinstalled 2006, does not have the problem that YC has witch I did not have so you don't need regedit.

Maybe for us longtimers, but for someone new does need some help.
Yes it will remove all the program but you will lose all your downloaded content if you don't do what I wrote, just looks complex due on the different options depending if Karen can use CMP or not.

Ah, gotcha. Thought there was an uninstall program in the folder?
I've heard the same problem uninstalling Silent Hunter 4 - after using the 'uninstall' program, one should go in and re-clean things out, regedit, etc.

I think sometimes things to a little to "intertwined" in the OS for their own good.

Goto the Auran shop and select service packs you will find the 2006 Sp1 there, Need broad band to fownload it best, if still on dial-up you might want to order the CD?

Also, if you have Windows Vista as a operating system(OS), when the TRS installer asks which folder to install to, change the directory to File C:/TRS2006
