How to make a video

I've been making Slide shows of specific trains that I run on my route; the SKD. Now I'd like to learn how to make videos. The problem is that I can't find any information about creating one doing Google searchers.

Others have posted vidoes on U tube so I know it can be done.

Hopefully, someone can point me in the right direction, and even post a few sites, so I can get started.

Thanks,

Hello,

while I am not the best at making videos, click on the link in my signature to view some of my videos. The way to do it, is to get a recording program. I use fraps, http://www.fraps.com/download.php. You can only record 30 second clips at a time. However, using a movie making program you can string the clips together and add different effects. The program I use most is Windows Movie Maker which is a program that comes with Windows XP and up. I also have Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0.

Hope this helps,
Matt

Make a video

Hi Joel - There are a few bits of software out there to be able to make a video but one of the most common is Fraps. The free version takes short videos but you could string them together and edit them with any video editing suite such as pinnacle for example. This would also let you add your own music or voice over etc. You can get Fraps here... www.fraps.com
Hope this helps. Doug

Thanks guys. I downloaded Fraps. I use to use Fraps when I was online auto racing years ago, so the 1st thing I did was check to see just how bad my fps were, and they weren't anywhere where I would like them. So I need to do some graphics tweaking.

Next thing I did was discover just how easy it was to shoot a 30 second clip. All you have to do is hold down the F9 key. Then release, push again, and then the next clip is shot. Next thing I did was open up Windows Movie Maker, and import the 4 test clips. I added them to the story line and I now had a rough (ok, very rough movie), very rough 2 min movie with sound.

So now I'm going to have to learn how to edit, when and where to start and end clips, and soon I have the movies I want.

This is turning into another off shoot hobby from Trainz. One that I know I'm going to really enjoy. And it's a great way to share with everyone on the list. Of course I'll have to learn how to upload them to U tube as the uploads will be 100s of MBs and my ISP max is only 27 MB.

Thats pretty much how I learned to do it. Some people can't get the sound to record corectly on fraps of if that at all. I used to have XP and saw that fraps has a terrible time trying to record the sounds on XP. Trying it on Win 7, no problem. However it seems you might have the hang of it. Oh and you don't need to hold the F9 key. Just click it to start recording, and click it again to stop recording.

I can only echo what everyone has said before me. Get Fraps, start filming, edit in WMM and upload to Youtube. If you're going to make a lot of videos, I suggest getting the full version of Fraps (it removes the time limit of the clips as well as the watermark, and gives you more options for screencapture files).

Also, It might help to know what type of videos you plan on making.

Are you going to just put clips together of the train rolling by?

or are you going to all-out edit them with SFX and whatnot?

Sony Vegas is great for heavy video editing, but if you're not serious about it, then stick with Windows Movie Maker.

Anyways, I didn't know that about Vegas. It was on sale and came with other programs(DVD making and audio editing.
