How to design your own, houses, engines etc.

Could someone tell me how to design your own buildings, engines, rolling stock etc.? Do you need a special program? I have trainz 2009.

I just installed the 2004 version. Thinking of getting the '09 in a few weeks, and I was wondering how to create my own stuff as well.

Most are recommending Blender for 2009, but you can also use Gmax. You will probably want to get a graphics program as well, like Gimp or Paint.net, or Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. You can create content using free downloads like some of the one I've mentioned.

You'll need a program like GMax (along with the Content Creation Pack, scroll down to find it on the page given) or Blender or 3DSMax. Then I would recommend looking at the tutorials here.

I couldn't get Gmax yet, but I got the rest of what I think it said I needed from the links provided.

Hopefully, I will export some small stuff soon.


In the area I live in, the are some derelict tobacco barns from about 70 years ago just sitting in fields. I'm gonna go see if I can get some pictures of one to use.

Those would be a great addition to Trainz, keep us posted and ask for help if you need it, but remember that Google and the forum Search function may also be used to answer questions.

I personally don't smoke, but in this area of the US (North Carolina), tobacco was and is a big cash crop. The tobacco barns I am talking about aren't in use any more as they have been replace by electric aluminum dryers.

I went and looked earlier today, and apparently, the couple I knew of were torn down a couple months ago and I can't find another one.

I may see what google has to offer for images.
