how to change how alerters function?

I'm new to Trainz and have the 2006 version. Is there a way to change how the alerters function in some of the trains? Would this be through altering some scripts or rules?

This is actually part of my research looking at how the alerters might be improved. We are trying to find out if Trainz could be used as a platform to demo some different ideas.
