How is Trainz Plus (Trainz Simulator 2022) currently running with AMD graphics cards?

Hello,

I wanted to ask how Trainz Plus is currently running with AMD graphics cards ? I would like to build a new PC and an RX 9070 (XT) is an option that I find interesting.

At the moment I still have a notebook with an RX6850M XT and Trainz Plus is not running well. It only reaches 15 FPS, which is why I cancelled the Trainz Plus subscription in March/April.

Thanks for your answers

I run an RTX 4080 (12 gig) and I have no issues at all. Rock solid at 30 FPS and holds about 40FPS on a very large route with THOUSANDS of trees lining most of the track.

May I suggest an Nvidia card instead (depending on your budget)? I've heard from a friend that trainz runs better on nvidia and intel combos (or used to). I'm unfamiliar with AMD systems (I have never owned or used one), however, thought that I'd share this information in case you're willing to take an Nvidia card into consideration.

Hello steve180,

Nvidia is so difficult. They simply offer too many cards that are useless e.g. the RTX 5060 TI with 16 GB is very weak for 1080P. The RTX 5070 is not a good investment for the future because of its 12 GB vram. So you have to start with an RTX 5070 TI or RTX 5080 to have a few years of peace of mind. And that's where AMD clearly undercuts Nvidia with its prices and you get more performance.

That is a notebook, so it is going to not perform as well as a desktop. Also:
Hello pdkoester,

I know that. I have now also seen that Trainz 2022/Plus recommends an RTX 3070 at the highest settings. So I'm not surprised that Trainz runs so badly on my mobile GPU.

The RX6850M XT with 12 gigs of DDR6 memory is quite a respectable card for trainz. https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

Anything with a score of 10k on the 3D benchmark is reasonable, at 17k the AMD laptop card should be fine. You might be getting some thermal throttling on the laptop. My first thought are what graphics settings are you using? Try throttling them back a bit especially the distance one. Second what content are you running? Middleton for laptops should run on anything. If you have some high poly assets in the screen then that can slow anything down even an RTX 4080 and there are one of two sketchup models on the DLS that will kill anything.

AMD / nVidia, well nVidia are through the roof on pricing at the moment and AMD aren't far behind. nVidia are more efficient in terms of something per watt and keeping things cooler is always good. Intel B580 should be enough for most Trainz users. Trainz makes use of turfX currently but is tying to move away for it. With a new card I'd go 16 gigs of memory. I've seen a few Dell refurbished workstations with a RTX380 10 gigs from Dell but they are rare.

I might look through Dell https://www.dell.com/de-de/gaming/alienware-desktops just to see what configurations they offer. They usually get the balance right.

I note that a 12 gig RTX 5070 is 500 euros on amazon, a 12 gig RX 9070 is 560. I'd probably go with the nVidia card.

I used to use AMD cards years ago and the performance was comparable if not a bit better than NVidia cards sometimes. The problem with AMD isn't the hardware, it's their drivers which really are hit or miss more so than NVidia which seems to go on a bender once in a while but not as frequently.

As far as NVidia goes, I'd avoid the 50xx series and go for a RTX4080 or RTX4090. Being the latest and greatest, the 50xx series are going to demand the highest pricing and unless you really need the latest features, you are only paying for the name and status symbol. The RTX4080 or RTX4090 cards are the best as far as cost and performance right now and will offer you plenty of power and then some. If this says anything, I'm running Trainz and other graphics intensive programs and games on an RTX3080 and the card handles this without much effort.

The thing you have to watch out for with the new cards is will they fit inside your computer chassis. All the new cards regardless of brand or chipset are beasts today taking up multiple slots and can barely squeeze in length wise into some chassis.

Yes it is. I absolutely love this card.....very fast and very little heat. My old RTX 3070 was fast, but was also a furnace....usually running 90-95*C. The 4080 is a great card all the way around.
The 30xx series do run quite hot but I've never experienced 90-95c temps. You should use something to cool down your GPU otherwise you'll experience throttling. The GPU will start throttling down to prevent burning itself up. If you can, use a program such as MSI's Afterburner to control the fans. You can adjust the speed up and even lower the GPU power to lower the temps. I lower my GPU power to 85% and the temps are in the 60s instead of 70s and I see no discernable difference in performance especially in Trainz.

I use Afterburner only to control fan speeds. My 'puter sounds like a 747 during take-off. The new machine with the 4080 is much cooler and quieter.

My 3080 is definitely a heater and requires lowering the temps any way possible including lowering the power.
