How Important is Patch, and How To?

So I have a few other posts reguarding how to do a patch. I just downloaded Trainz 2010. How important is it to install the patch? Second, can someone please give me a detailed procedure on how to install a patch? Please!

Every patch introduces new flaws as well as fixing old ones; the SP3 and hotfix introduce what I consider to be unacceptable flaws into Surveyor. SP3 itself introduces a bug in which Trainz locks up completely when saving a route and session at the same time (although they apparently save ok) and the hotfix introduces a bug where some Surveyor objects take a very long time to open. I just don't want to have anything to do with those, though I did do a basic SP3 installation for the purpose of participating in the DLS asset repair project going on which will be replaced with my full Trainz installation once it all is done.

Your mileage may vary and if you mainly drive then these bugs won't affect you. Even if you create routes, you might find them to simply be inconvenient, not a deal-breaker. I just don't find SP3 or the hotfix to be worth the headache.

As for running the patches, just go to the Auran Announcements forum, download the appropriate patch named for the current version of your Trainz and the number it is to be upgraded to, and download and run it, preferably as administrator on Vista or Win7 systems. If the patch doesn't automatically find the EXE file, use the Browse button to find your Trainz installation.

Hi Everybody.
I have had Trainz 2010 installed for 13 months now and I have never patched at all. I have had no trouble using surveyor or downloading anything on the DLS or CMP. As far as I can see the only time you will definitely need to patch is if you intend to buy the latest Auran payware content.

My advice would certainly be give 2010 a good run on your system if everything functions as it should then leave it alone, do not patch.

However,if you find difficulty with surveyor or anything else then try patching to the latest version.

There is a good old saying which quotes " if it ain't broke don't fix it" that was the advice I was given by the one very experienced Trainzer and it has certainly held good for me.

Don't patch just because it seems to be the thing to do.

There is another reason to patch - anyone who wishes to participate in the multiplayer beta (and has registered their TS2010 serial number before January 10 2011) also must have SP3 and the hotfix installed before the multiplayer patch can be installed.
