How do you start and stop engines?

Surely this is a feature? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Having 12 engines on in a big yard is kinda silly. Cheers.

There is such a feature, but it is only available on certain (usually payware) locomotives - it will usually mention in the description of those locomotives if that feature is available.

"Alt + [" is engine on and "Alt + ]" is engine off. It probably only affects the selected loco. I don't know if it works for all locos as Shane suggested.

The hotkeys are on the Keyboard Shortcuts card if you bought the boxed set and also listed in keyboard.txt in folder UserData\Settings. It may be in the manual as well but I've never read it.

ps - I suggest you don't edit or even save the keyboard.txt file. It's layout implies it might be used by Trainz as a reference file. But you could copy it to somewhere else.

Ok thanks for the replies, it doesn't work on my loco's and I find it quite strange that you can't turn off your engines. It's not even possible to have "dead" engines, transporting them as bogies. Is there a specific reason why such a (you'd think simple and obvious) feature is missing in the standard Trainz models?

After you put the engine(s) on the track in Surveyor click on the question mark at the bottom right of the Train section. After that click on each individual engine and put fuel and sand in it.

This site shows you how to turn the L SD70s that are built into, at least, TRS2006 and TRS2009 on and off in Driver:

There are some built-in none-standart models in TS12, like 2TE116 locomotives. They have ability to switch engine on/off. But their startup isn't single-key.

(built-in locos have other cabin, though the algoritm is the same)
