How do train crews know when they have cleared a speed limit sign?

Do they simply note the reading of the odometer as the train passes the sign? If the train is a half mile long, then the odometer must read 0.50 miles more than the reading at the time the lead locomotive passed the sign. I take it that each and every engineer or conductor should be cognizant of his train's overall length at all times.

That's part of it and the train crew knows how long their train is, and have to know the length of a siding that they are pulling in or out of. Some FREDs have a sensor that sends a signal back to the cab to inform the crew when they've passed beyond a speed limit sign.

To simulate that you can add a trackmark at the sign and set a sound as the train leaves the trackmark or a pop-up message. info bar at the bottom of the screen also sows actual speed limit and it will only show a higher speed limit when the tail of the train passes the lower speed limit. There are some payware locomotives with working train length counter that you can use if you have checked your train length.
