Just click on the green light in the top-right corner. It will show your "buddy" list, which contains your friends and channels. By default, you will find the #trainz channel Just join and chat. Do have patience; people are usually busy in game so it can take a few minutes before people notice you wrote something.
If you can not get access, be sure you have entered the correct username and password under options.
