Help With Custom Content

Greetings, all.

I have recently purchased TRS2009, and am running into a few difficulties. I had Trainz previously, but it was the original version; you know, the one before they started tacking the year of release onto the name. ;) Needless to say, the new version is quite different.

I've figured out many of the differences, and am well on my way to building my own route, but I do have some difficulties with some custom content. I downloaded a number of additional engines, and while some of them work without a hitch, a few of them show up with their names in red when I look through the trains list in Surveyor mode. The logical assumption seems to be that something is wrong with those assets, as most of them don't work and can't be placed, and red is most often used as a warning color. What throws me off, though, is that SOME of them DO work. Example: A steam loco I downloaded doesn't work, but it's tender does, even though both of them have red names.

Is there a way to find out what exactly is wrong with these items, and how to fix them? A list of dependencies or something else I'm missing? I haven't yet been able to make heads or tails of the content manager, and have not yet been able to find anything resembling a helpfile for it. The "manual" linked from the launcher is next to useless for someone like me who has been away from the community for so long, since it doesn't seem to go into much detail on... well... anything.

I have tried using the search function, but have run across nothing promising thus far, so I obviously either don't know how to use it or don't know what terms I should be searching for.

Please help, and please forgive me for being such a newbie after all these years.

Hopefully you will get some more expert replies than this, but I suspect that you have no choice but to get to grips with the content manager. I have finally "mastered" the TC3 CMP, (which means anyone can!) and I beleive the TS09 one is supposed to be easier.

Hi Toroca and welcome back!

The most up to date downloadable document regarding fixing errors can be found here:

http://www.trainzclassics.co.uk/

Look under "Guides" > "Content error repair" - it's a PDF file. (OK it's TC3 but applies to 2009 in most cases).

There are also many threads on this forum with error repair advice. You may also find some more info on the Wiki.

***

To see the general nature of the error:

Open CM2 (Content Manager 2 - Content on the first Trainz menu)
Set the filter to show faulty items
Right click the "dodgy" item
Select the option to show errors and warnings

(CM2 is easy once you get used to it!!)

***

Most error fixing is straightforward once you get confident in doing it.

It's worth checking out PEVs tool for error correction.

The above is just a summary, please post again if you need more help.

Using the info provided by itareus (thanks!) I have managed to figure out enough of the content manager to remove all of the items that were completely broken (non-functional) since they appeared to have issues I can't fix, like missing meshes and such. The remaining items are all functional, but have errors like a missing texture or obsolete tags and such.

Is there any problem with leaving these working items with errors in the game? Also: is there any way to determine if such errors exist before installing an item into the game if it doesn't come from the DS?

As a general rule.....

If you are running in Native mode then don't use any content that shows up red in surveyor or you will have problems. If you really want the item then investigate a fix. Some mesh problems can be fixed using PEVs tools.

If you are running in Compat mode then pretty well anything will work but of course your route won't then work correctly (or at all) in Native mode.

Content which is shown with "Errors" (or is in "Warnings" can't remember!) anyway a yellow icon in CM2 is no problem in either mode, its the "Faulty" content (red icon in CM2 ) that causes problems in Native mode.

I'm not aware of any way to check for errors other than installing the content into CM2 and checking there. (I suppose there is some way you could check manually but it would not be worth the effort). I routinely check any newly installed content (just see if it shows in the Faulty filter) and if I regard it as unfixable I get rid of it.

There is very little that can't be fixed with some determiation (and maybe an appeal to the original creator in extreme circumstances)!

I don't understand why nearly everything I've downloaded comes up as faulty in one way or another, whether obtained from the DS or a third party site. About half of them won't even work, the rest will work, but most with errors remaining according to CM.

On one steam engine, I fixed the tag errors CM was reporting, but when I did, the engine in Driver mode looked like the boiler was on fire. It seems the tag that was "broken" was working after all, because it was making the smoke effects the proper size. Until I "fixed" it. I've restored the broken version. :P

I'm having a separate issue with mcguirel's otherwise lovely UP Pullman Coaches. On those, the yellow versions seem to have a LOD error, because when viewed from far enough away, the yellow ones turn grey, except for the ends of the cars. It's frustrating, because if you point the camera back from the engine toward the rest of the train, with about six cars on it, the last one or two will be grey instead of yellow. I have no idea how to fix that, or even if I can...

toroca,
If you us CM2 to open the UP Pullman kuid for Edit in Explorer and view the pull01_body\pull01_body_lowest.im mesh you'll see that the side of the car is a blue grey. Using PEV's mesh_text_viewer.exe program it shows that ...lowest.im uses side_low.tga whereas the other three meshes use side.tga. Bottom line, if you want to be able to always see the golden-yellow color on the side, you can:
1. Edit side_low.tga graphic to change the blue-gray to color used in the other 3 meshes, or easiest
2. Edit pull01_body\pull01_body.lm.txt to delete:
mesh("0.1")
{
name="Pull01_body_lowest.im";
}

Then save and commit.
The TRS2006CCG explains the LOD system starting on page 370.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. :) But what is and where will I find the TRS2006CCG?

Toroco,

What build version are you running?
Without starting it up to be certain, I think it says build 40040 or something like that. I'll check later if I load Trainz this evening.

Thanks again, guys. This noobie/oldbie appreciates the patience. :)

Toroca,

If you're on 40040 (SP2) then I'm not sure I can give you sound advice as there have been some significant changes in this build with error checking / reporting (and I'm still running build 38411).

Hopefully somebody else, who is up to speed with build 40040, will be able to help you with your general errors.

Good luck!

help with custom content too!

hi all im having the same trouble.I've got some of s301's content but its missing dependicies i've looked it up and it says unknown location and the kuid and I havent fiddled with it because theres so much a 12 year old can do!

JGPNGEAMR,
If you have problems with a specific kuid that you can't fix, post the kuid number here and I or someone will help. If I can fix your problem kuid, I'll provide detailed step by step instructions of how I fixed it so you can do the same thing. It's important for all Trainz uses to learn the techniques needed to achieve smooth operation of their Trainz setup. For most problems it's not really that hard, just takes a little time.

Can you let me know which kuids are missing? :)

And from which items? :)

I think I know the problem, but want to confirm before I start giving you a billion kuids to try downloading :P

Okay, new problem. How does one go about changing the engine sounds?

I downloaded a couple of new engines today, and one of them had a very loud and somewhat annoying engine sound that overwhelmed the normal background noises. Since it was a steamer, I thought I could change it to use the same sounds that #836 and #844 use, since those don't bother me. But now it doesn't play any sounds at all! Even weirder, when I tried changing it back to the original sounds, it STILL won't play them. I'm at a complete loss. The files seem to match the format specified in the CCG, and the sounds work on #836 (which I tested to make sure I hadn't inadvertently broken something). But the train is silent... Any thoughts?
