I'll try to give this one a shot...

Each piece in Trainz is assigned a KUID number. This also applies to certain 'parts' of locomotives; power calculations, horn sounds, cab interiors and bogies (aka trucks) all have individual KUID numbers.

Now, depending on how the locomotive was made, some "Bogies" will interchange and some will not.

In Content Manager, you can "open" the locomotive for editing. Whether you do this in Explorer or Content Creator, it works the same. Find where the bogies KUID number is listed, then replace that with the KUID of the bogie you prefer.

Again, some bogies will not interchange. This is due to the placement of the attachment points at the creation of the Loco. Even though the new bogie shows, it could be a little higher off the rails, or positioned more forward or backward from the original bogies position.

The whole process of interchanging bogies can be tedious, especially going back and forth between Content Manager and Surveyor just to see the results.

Do not use CCP ('Content Creator'). It will try to update the config file of the asset and more than likely break it. Always open the asset for editing in Explorer.

You can certainly change bogies on traincars for appearances but you shouldn't try to change a loco from 4 wheel trucks to 6 wheels. Wheel configurations on locos are a function of the loco model. Roughly, you'll find that a loco will have one axel per 70,000 lbs of weight. This is based on the limit of 35,000 lbs per wheel which is all the pressure the rail can withstand.
