Help with a faulty asset

Okay, the problem is this: "Error: Failed to load sound file 'bells.wav', please ensure this is a valid wav file."

There's a tutorial by Dave Snow on how to fix this problem. This is a HF4-introduced bug which fixed a sound issue with TS12. His how-to is in the TS12 support forum. You'll need to download a free audio editor called Audacity if you don't have that.

Another option if you don't have Audacity is to get hold of AssetX (created by andi06 and PEV) - link is available from the PEVSoft Tools page on my tutorial site. This has a Repair Waves option in the Repair menu that can be used (as well as a good help file).

Right. I downloaded AssetX, so how do I find the faulty asset in the program?

I figured out how to set it to the right version of Trainz at least.

OK - first thing you will need to do is to open the affected asset(s) for edit. Once this is done they should appear in the list on the left-hand side of the AssetX window.

Once this is done, click each one at a time, clicking Repair followed by Repair Waves. Once this is done for each asset (if more than one) re-commit the affected asset(s).

Shane

OK - sounds like your Asset-X is not set up correctly in that case. Click Tools, then Options, then the Paths option, then select the little folder icon next to Home Folder. Use this to select <trainz installation folder>/UserData/editing (<trainz installation folder> is where you installed Trainz to).

Note - you may have to restart Asset-X for this to take effect.

Shane

It shouldn't do if you follow the instruction exactly. <trainz installation folder> needs to be replaced with the actual reference to the folder where you installed Trainz to originally.

Shane

It probably is, as Asset-X reads from the Home folders. What exactly did you select/enter for the home folder reference (and your TS12 folder location)?

Shane

OK - in order to help I will need to know exactly what you selected. Your other option (which is just as complex) is to use the Audacity method mentioned above, or to contact the creator and see if they can upload a fix.

One thought though - have you installed all the current content updates available for your version? (The Content Updates button is on the TS12 in-game menu).

Shane

Yes. If you installed TS12 into the default folder as suggested by the installer, the correct path should be c:/program files (x86)/N3V Games/TS12. For the home folder, add /UserData/editing on the end.

Changing the build number is not a good idea unless you know what you are doing. This can introduce further errors and warnings.

Shane

Seconded. Though I agree that changing the build number to one that is representative of when the asset was released (There by flagging it to be read correctly by trainz, assuming it will read that build number at all), it can destroy the games ability to read any scripting (Including how to use that .wav) entirely, and you'll end up worse then you started.

Even though changing a build number is an easy thing to do, its easy to mess up assets, particularly newer or more complicated ones (Such as sound Assets).

Though I would point out as well that changing it in Explorer would be safer then the trying to do this in CMP. Whatever, its up to you to learn and experiment on your own if you wish to fix this issue. AssetX I believe is perhaps one of the better suggestions I've seen yet.
