Help on Train Simulator 2014

Sorry, I have been a subscriber to UKTrainSim now for over 20 years and I would refute the discrediting of the site. In the old days, Vernon Moorhouse had "trainsim.co.uk" and Matt and Peter Peddlesen had Atomic Systems which devoted a section to UK trainsim. This was way before Auran Trainz even got off the drawing board.

If anything, UK Trainsim has been biased towards Microsoft Train Simulator and the later MSTSBin development, because the "established customer base" go back to the launch of MSTS and beyond.

I run Train Simulator 2014 as well as Trainz and have no bias for either - they both do entirely different jobs. Microsoft and later Railworks/Train Simulator have always endeavoured to create a realistic driving experience, whereas Trainz started life, and still is for the most part, more geared up towards Railway Modelling - that is why you have "baseboards" and "layouts".

So please stop trying to create an "us and them" division where none exists!

I think you'll find that Trainz is not "more geared up towards Railway Modelling", it models more than just railways, it models ALL modes of transport, rail, road, river, sea & air, Trainz has working canal locks & ferries.

I have also seen 'first hand' how UKTS treats anyone who even suggests that Trainz does anything better than MSTS or RS.

For sure, Trainz has evolved into what it is today, but its raison d'etre, was Railway Modelling. I think you will also find that a large part of the evolution process also had to do with the Trainz Community and not entirely to the credit of the developers! The original "Brew Crew", to their eternal credit, built up a very loyal, dedicated and helpful band of enthusiasts through this very forum who contributed greatly to creating models with new features. TS12 is a far cry from the first "Trainz" which, to be fair, was streets ahead of the early simulators and entirely different from MSTS.

I have also seen how some members of the UKTS community behave, as well as some members of this Forum behave. It is for this very reason that Vernon Moorhouse (vern) seldom posts on either forum any more, as well as a few other talented modellers and route builders. For myself, I still retain a foot in both camps as I find Trainz and Rail Simulator both have a purpose in my life. If it wasn't for my commitment to ATI Graphics, I would probably still be using MSTS too because some very interesting UK models have recently made an appearance over there. With MSTSBin, better graphics are supported as well as cab swapping features which instantly made Trainz a better option when it came along.

As far as I can see, there is no need for any particular community to disrespect each other. In the quest for continuous improvement, the sharing of the knowledge pool and mutual cooperation between users of Mechanik EN57, Boso View Express, MSTS, MSTSBin, Railworks, Trainz etc will benefit us all in the long run. If there is one message to be rammed home this Christmas time, it is to be on good terms with all people.

All the best!

I had a link in my signature to TANE Kickstarter at UKTS. It lasted for one post before my sig was disabled. When TS2010 came out, the news and announcements page had an item which started along the lines of "Trainz has always had it's critics, due to xx and yy, but there's a new version out .... etc". Can you imagine a new version of RW/TS receiving that intro from UKTS? There is absolutely no chance.

It was OK in the MSTS days, but since RW came along UKTS has been singing the party line ever more loudly. I have nothing against the people who go there - it's the moderation and editorial policies that I dislike.

I can't believe people argue over Railworks or Trainz being better. Disabling a signature because of the TANE Kickstarter is just pathetic.

If that is the case, then I agree. We're always being told that "competition is healthy" and the woirld of Railway Simulators, that is certainly true. Without the pioneering spirit of freeware Mechanik, BVE etc, the present day stuff would never have been so both companies should be mindful that they owe their success to a bunch of mathematics students and their tutor at a Polish University, and a rather pleasant Japanese gentleman who made access to their simulators both free and open source! Continuous improvement is the name of the game and long may that continue!

I actually terminated my forum membership at UKTS because it was simply impossible to have a straight up conversation about RW without either getting flamed by fanbois (who the mods disregarded) or slapped down by the mods. It is possible to like a product but still want to criticise certain elements. Whatever may be right or wrong in the world of Trainz, kudos to N3V for allowing both praise and criticism of their product on their own consumer forum.

Vern,

You've pointed out something which makes the N3V forums and the community much different and more interactive. If it wasn't for the openness of the forums here, we wouldn't be seeing a new version of Trainz coming out. It's our critique of the product and pointing out what we'd like changed and updated here that has gotten the developers attention. They probably knew these things needed changing, but our insistence and loud voices helped make it happen.

Let's hope we can continue to have civilized, although sometimes heated, debates about all train simulators and not knock either in any way. Both programs have their good points and quirks, by point out the quirks, we can only make things better.

John

After Steam updated 2012, I removed the whole mess, paid $40 for for Trainz Simulator 12.
Very glad to be back.
Patched from 46957 through 61388.
Now, if I can just relearn how all this works!
