Help needed

Hello all,

I'm trying to set my boxcars to handle the right number of pallets. I have a general idea of what they carry, but I want to do it right. If anybody who has experience with loading/unloading boxcars (all sizes) can give me a hand, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance.

Are my postings invisible?

Join the club! Let see if I can help. Way back when I used to unload railcars, they where usually double stacked....I count 48 pallets 24 a layer. Another way to figure it out is to take a mesurment of your typical pallet (which I can't remember at the moment) then find how much floor space you have.

You also may have to figure out what's on the pallet.

Thanks for the help.
I did a little figuring on the pallets using the dimensions of 48" long by 40" wide.
The weight is something else to be considered. Auto engines are a lot heavier than tires.
The main reason for my asking is I plan on using the boxcars for food, auto parts, and general hardware. I forgot that you could double and triple stack them.
Also, you mentioned you worked on the railroads? Do you happen to know how many cars/trucks/suv's are able to fit in a car hauler? Thanks in advance.

I didn't work for the railroad ...I just unloaded a few railcars in my time.

Another thing to factor in is the size of the boxcar. My count is for a typical 40ft boxcar.

I don't know how much a car hauler would hold, but I'm sure that answer can be found somewhere on the internet.

40 ft box will hold 11 rows of pallets = 22
45 ft box will hold 12 ....................= 24
double stacking and higher depends on product.
wieght per pallet will vary on product but as a guide 1 ton per pallet average.
light products like popcorn breaky cereal are generaly stacked high so no double stacking.
heavy products to are genraly not double stacked as this can lead to top heavy stabillity.
tyres are normaly loose loaded. as are many items that cant be packed on a pallet.
note also that oversize pallets are used in motor industries on average list as 2 pallets
hope that helps

I am not sure if it's different for different types of autos/vehicles, but as far as cars go the average car hauler can hold 6 cars on each level and has 3 levels, so figure on about 18 cars per auto rack and you should be real close. I hope this helps.
