Help me increase framerate

Any suggestions for increasing framerate on a GeForce 8600 GT (1 Gig) card? I have a 2.2 GHz Athlon 64x2 with 4 Gigs of RAM, and I've been testing with the beginning of the Lincoln Relief scenario. With ALL the video sliders fully left (minimums), paring down to a windowed 1024 x 768 (my mornal resolution is 1400 x 900), I'm BARELY getting the frame rate up around 9-10 fps and stalls are only coming about once every 30 seconds now (yeah).

The thing is, I'm coming over from Brand-X, and it ran like a scalded cat on my machine, even at 125 mph on the Paddington to Oxford route. The only reason I'm here is I'm tired of being "marketed" to.

Please don't say I need to download a fresh version. That was a four-day experience I do NOT want to repeat.

Oh, and DirectX will NOT run. I get no controls in the trains and lots of "scrpit" errors instead of messages.

Yes, I've updated my video drivers from Nvidia, and DirectX from Microsoft. Everything else on the machine runs fine.

Frustrated :'(

Welcome to the forums.

In order to advise on the script errors, I need to know what route they are happening with, and which version of Trainz (including the 5-digit number on the Launcher) you are running.

Be aware that the ECML route, if that's the one you are using, is detailed and requires a fairly powerful system to run it at a decent framerate.

Well, it bothers me that nothing works at all with DirectX, and MS says my version is fine. I'm going to delete and reinstall DirectX. Wish me luck.

I would also look closely at your memory. 4Gb of RAM is very small by today's standards, particularly as there are often many programmes running quietly in the background. You could use a games booster (such as IOBIT) to free up a bit of space, but seriously, you need to look at adding additional RAM. 12 to 16 Gb would open up your compting experience markedly.

Depends on whether the OP is running a 64bit OS of Windows, Robert3a0 - if 32bit, then the 4Gb cited is the maximum that OS can address (actually, usually only 3.25Gb of that.)
Flaugher - are you installing the Direct X 9.0x version that Trainz requires? If not, check Shane Turner's website for more information and assistance.
Cheers! PC

PC_Ace, unless the OP applied the 4GB limit allowed for trainz.exe, it is not going to use more than 2GB anyway for 32 bit program.

Your video card isn't in the top ten. Trainz has lot of user made content some are more demanding than others.

Your CPU isn't in the top ten either http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html

My suggestion would be start with a blank baseboard and drop in a circle of track. New add in a simple diesel loco and a couple of box cars whitepass's are fairly good and see how that runs. If its OK then slowly add assets. Some layouts are built by people with liquid nitrogen cooled over clocked CPUs and a graphics card that has lots of power. Just accept you will not be able to run them without the same hardware set up. Oh and avoid Sketchup created models they have too many polys for you.

If you can get directX to work and Shane has a number of tutorials about how to tweak it you'll probably get better results, I won't bother to run it in a window you'll probably get just as good results going native resolution.

Which operating system are you running by the way?

Thanks John
