heard the news, This new movie is nothing good

Remember, movies are entertainment, not to be taken too seriously. That is one of the problems today, people look for movies to be a recreation of life rather than entertainment from life. As far as runaway trains, I used to transport crews and have heard stories of crude devices made by crews to hit the button for them, so it is not too far fetched that there could be a runaway train on the rails should something cause the crews were knocked out by fumes or something. Remember, for every mechanical safety device there is a way around them, and people will find it. How many people moved out of LA after the movie Volcano came out, or California after the recent Earthquake movies, or off of the planet after Armageddon, Deep Impact, etc etc. Relax everyone and enjoy life. Education is the best answer to peoples opinions of railroads, and making the media more responsible in their writing of the news and events. If you believe the media and hype the Three Mile Island was a major nuclear power plant accident, when all it really came down to was a puff of steam and redundant safety systems doing what they needed to do in the end to prevent a disaster.

Well regardless of all the mistakes I liked Unstoppable.

The only part I didn't like was when the train was tipping as it was going around the curve, that would've bent the axels as they aren't designed to carry the weight of the train like that.

The only other problem was that CSX 8888 (the real runaway train) was an SD40-2 not an AC4400.

Otherwise great film.

I think all rivet counters should take a long walk down a track with a oncoming train and tell me if the plow was placed on the unit correctly... It is a movie get over it.

agreed....and normally I am a rivet counter and I loved the movie

Westerns aren't 'cool' anymore you see. Like Pirate movies weren't cool anymore, but somehow Disney managed to get out of that and Pirates of the Caribean was a success.
So Westerns are out of fashion, just like people don't wear wigs often anymore.

okay, so on TV tonight, there was a trailer for a new movie called "unstoppable" whose plot centers around a runaway train. Its obvious the writers and directors didn't study the railways for five minutes before they went and wrote this plot.

First off, the trailer states the runaway trains weighs "1'000'000 tons" fat chance you could get the three dash-9 units shown on the trailer to move that much, besides the fact there isn't a stretch of track in this country that could handle one million tons of train. Second off, the whole idea of a runaway in the modern era running rampant across the country is perposterous. every diesel nowadays has a button in the cab that must be pushed every 45 seconds (30 seconds if the train is moving faster than 45mph) and if it is not pushed and the audio alarm sounds for more than sixty seconds the train goes into instant emergency braking. simple as that.

And another thing. This movie just percipitates the stereotype that all the railways know how to do is crash trains. the only time, it seems, that the railway network in this country (the US) makes the headlines is when a train carrying toxic chemicals derails and a tank car (inevitably called a "tanker" by the publisher) in the consist blows up. wrecks are rare in this day in age, but if you beleive the media, they seem to happen every other day.

Ugh, sometimes i hate movies and movie companies. This movie hasn't even come out yet and its a disaster already--for the railway companies.

Well, there, i guess i've gotten that off my chest. I just wanted to rant on this while i had it on my mind. Its pathetic, really, how little they tried to understand about the railways before they made this. If you're a railfan/rail lover, don't see this movie. It will insult your railway sensibilities.
Ugh! Heritage in 2003. I saw the trailer too and the coaches on the passenger train that nearly got hit by the so-called "runaway" train had heritage coaches. I have nothing against heritage but its a little odd. :hehe:
Also, I am quite a grump when it comes about "derailments will occur everyday" stuff. Stupid Hollywood. Airplanes will crash more than trains. You NEVER hear about derailments on the news and when an airplane crashes it is a MISSLE.
Please enjoy this pathetic play about the movie:
Title: Thomas and the "runaway" train
Thomas: woah I'm going fast!
Idiotic movie maker: Oh no, Thomas won't stop with Annie and Claribel (put TNT in Annie with long cord)
Thomas: Help!
Sir Tophamm Hatt: No Thomas! Those are the buffers!
*Random TNT goes off when Thomas crashes*
Thomas: Now who is the genius that put TNT in Annie?!

We saw the movie Unstoppable last night and we both loved it. The kicker is that my wife, who hardly ever likes the movies I like, stated as we were walking out of the theater that she wouldn't mind seeing it again...and she hates watching movies more than once.

Note: At the point where the rookie gets his foot smashed she swallowed her gum :hehe:

I saw it last weekend and the theater was almost full. I think Denzel Washington knows more about trains than I do:hehe: And comparing it to the real story, I think I got my moneys worth.

Strange, But Nice Film At Times

I have seen the movie and initially, I hated it. But after giving it some thought, I sort of like it. I do have my points of negativity but really I have decided to let it squeak by on my list. I just wish CSX 8888 had a cameo in the film and on the topic of 8888 a.k.a. 'Crazy Eights', she's now on Facebook, just search 'CSX 8888' and you'll find her page.

Why is it a she and not a he?

Didn't Denzel's character refer to the EMD he was operating as a she (as in she still has some juice left in her) when the yardmaster ask what he was using? And then there's that song "she'll be coming round the mountain...."
But then there's the Big Boy.

Finally saw the movie yesterday. All in all, I loved it. Yes, there were a few inaccuracies, but you'd have to be a big stick-in-the-mud to let it ruin the movie.

Biggest gripe was the Stanton Bridge scene. Other than that, excellent stuff.

Has anyone not seen the movie ? And are contemplating going to see it ?

I wouldn't want spoil the plot and ending for those who are going to go see it.

Basicly (as with all movies, I an sorry that I watch trailers and previews beforehand). Also researching the shooting locations, Milesburg, Tyrone Eldrige, Emporium, various othe nearby Pittsburgh locations, and into Ohio. This makes one logicaly think that the train is on a westward route ... instead of its movie portrayal of eastward route.

If I had not researched and watched many trailers ... the plot and movie would have been more realistic. I will probably rent the DVD to see all the out takes, and the behind the scenes footage of exactly how they made all the cool special effects.

Are those many large fuel tanks at the bridge really there on the prototype ? Thats a dumb location for fuel storage.
