... is anew one on me.

I'm trtying to level some track in an ex-dls route and I get that message.

I see that it is mentioned from time to time in various threads in the Beta sub-forum, but wading through several of them I haven't come across any specific info.

So I seek it here.

A couple of questions to help clarify the situation.

Are you using any version of TRS22 (PE or standard)?
Is the route using HD terrain?

If you are using TRS22 and the route is using HD terrain then you cannot edit it in TRS22. You have to convert it to a lower resolution (5m or 10m) first.

The route is HD. How can I convert it to SD ... and can I convert it back later?
Using Surveyor 2.0 and the Marquee Tool, select all the baseboards (or about a dozen at a time, a safer option), open the Context Menu and select Convert Existing Baseboards To... and select 5m or 10m.

The process is described on the Trainz Wiki at How to Use S20 Tools#Add Delete Convert Baseboards

No, you cannot convert it back to HD again not unless you have Trainz Plus. Instead, when you save the converted route give it a new name (e.g. add a 5m or 10m at the end of the existing name). That way the original HD version will be preserved on your system.

I'll have a play.
One of many things to remember with HD Terrain and Trainz Plus is that while you can convert a 5m or 10m route to HD in a single step, the conversion will not "sharpen" the terrain by turning a smoothly curved (i.e. a low resolution) mountain, for example, into a razor sharp (i.e. high resolution) ridge. You have to do that manually yourself.

Other things to remember are that:-
  1. HD baseboards cannot be mixed with 5m or 10m baseboards in the same route. It is all HD or none.
  2. HD baseboards are limited to a maximum of 16 different surface textures but each baseboard can have 16 different textures. You can use the Color Effect Layer (available only in Trainz Plus when using HD) to create the illusion of more colours.
  3. HD routes are very memory hungry. A HD baseboard uses 6,400x as much data as a 10m baseboard and 1,600x as much data as a 5m baseboard. Until N3V implements better data compression methods HD routes will quickly reach the 1GB size limit for .cdp files

@pware

I tried as an experiment to convert 5m Baseboards with the HD only around the track and soon discovered a very noticeable white line/cliff edge at the board borders.

The next experiment was to convert my Durango to Silverton route, last saved in Trainz22PE, to all HD with TrainzPlus. The 98 megabyte .cdp grew in size to 650 megabytes. Yowza!

The 98 megabyte .cdp grew in size to 650 megabytes.
The size limit for uploading a .cdp file to the DLS is around 450-500MB. When you export a route as a .cdp file Content Manager will compress it to a much smaller physical size and N3V recently increased the compression level used in TRS22 and Trainz Plus which has helped. But, as you found, you can quickly exceed the upload limit and, not long afterwards, exceed the limit for .cdp files as well. You can still save large routes but you have to export the route folder as a .tzarc file.
