Happy 85th Birthday...Queen Elizabeth

Nice video. I won't be watching any weddings but I will be in the pub to celebrate my free days holiday with full pay. :p

I would remind folks like robd, etc that the Monarchy costs us nothing. It is suggested it is less than 50p a head a year but it isn't even that. Every Monarch since George 3rd I think it was on the start of their reign has signed over the income of the Royal Estates to the government in lieu of the Civil List money etc. Considering that the income from the Estates is greater than the Civil List by tens of millions we make a profit. If I was Monarch I would scrap the prsent Civil List situ and just keep the Royal Estates! The wonderfully minded here go on about media hype and I agree that it is over the top but that is hardly the Queen's fault. Talk about dismal jimmies? The Nats up here might gripe as pfx earlier waxed about then they are never going to be in any position but be other tan moaners. We don't hear of them admiring wee places like Iceland, Ireland, etc now! Like many I am happy with the way things are but doesn't mean I am sycophantic any more than republicans are inherently right.

Are you getting bombarded with the rubbish in Australia as well. ;)

IKB.

Oh dear lord, yes!

As was said before, apparently the world stopped the day the wedding was announced.:sleep:

Oh well, i have Foxtel on the premium package, with 100+ channels, or something ridiculous like that, so I'm confident of finding something a little less nauseous to watch. Perhaps something on ABC kids?:hehe::hehe:

And if that fails, there's always Trainz!:D

I don't claim to be an expert on the politics of the Royals, but why do these things always dissolve into political discussions. All the OP was trying to do was wish the old lady a Happy Birthday. Is that so hard to do. Happy Birthday.

Mike

50p! 50p! That's 50p too much. 50p x 62million (approx UK population) = £31 million!

Thank you very much dear subjects, most kind.

I recall the wedding of Princess Anne to Mark Philips in the mid seventies, I was in the Royal Navy at the time and every serving member of the armed forces had 50p compulsorily docked from their pay in order to buy a 'gift' for the happy couple. One couldn't even voice an objection to that act of robbery, it would have been classed as mutiny or treason but it caused a lot of ill feeling towards the royals amongst service personel.

Are they still together? No, divorced!

Rob.

Good job you didn't have to chip in for the second marriage though!. Pretty sure it'd be more than 50p that time!

(who will be gardening, painting or mowing the lawn or anything else to avoid seeing a waste of our taxpayments to fund a royal wedding to apparently give the UK "the feelgood factor" in these hard times!!).

I don't think the service brass hats tried to pull that trick again with subsequent royal weddings.

Probably a good job considering the longevity anfd frequency of most of the Marriages in the royal family!. Are any of them on their first marriage besides the Queen and Phil the greek?!

Can't think of any at the mo, unfortunately this doesn't bode well for Will and Kate, sorry to say.

What is it robd and you other anti don't understand in a simple explanation.

The 34p I think it actually is is as I pointed out a misnomer as the government gets more in from the Royal Estates than it gives on Royal expenses and a primary school wean would know that means the system costs -- nothing. You choose to ignore that in your falling over each other to moan about costs. So what don't you understand about that?

I would like to know how my 50p or is it 34p is spent please?

Cost is of no interest to me.

The english royal family is of no consequence or value to Wales.

The so called "prince of wales" is english descended from german and greek royalty.

The last true Prince Of Wales, was Owain Glyndwr.

31 million

Wow 31 million for gifts and they even forced it on you what a stroke job, for half that much they could have bought them a used leaking garbage scow somewhere and sent them on an everlasting honeymoon in the Arctic circle.

Agree totally with these sentiments!

While we are on about costs rjhowie2, I'm sure my and everybody elses 34p will not cover the security costs for this wedding ie. Police, Army etc.

It's a bit like the Olympics really - we are told it's great for the UK, but I can't begin to imagine the cost to the country to stage it. I don't think Wales, Scotland, Ireland and anywhere north of London will benefit greatly from whatever profits are made!
