Happy 4th of July!

he's right you know cascade. There are only very slight differences between our America English and their UK/Queens English. It's only a small difference so it's not much to say that we speak differently to our British and Australian allies.

If I turned up at your house wearing just my vest and pants, you would appreciate the differences ;)

No, it was put to vote once and it was a resounding no, - the only way Australia will every become a republic is if we have a directly elected president, by the people and the nobs with money could never allow that as they might get someone they can not control .

Thing is, what would be the difference? Isn't it most likely that the govenor's post would just change name to president?

It isn't likely to happen as we like the way our governors general system work. Yes, Australia does still have ties to the UK and we still like the Queen but there really isn't any valid argument to become a full republic. The republic idea does come up every now and then but quickly dies due to apathy. For most purposes we are a republic anyway.

As someone who does travel the world a bit, it is remarkably refreshing to return to our little corner of the world. It really is a nice place to live.

No doubt there will be times it will be stirred over in Aussie but the Republicans cannot agree on the alternative so good for that! Many years ago i recll that a Governor general did step into a fracas in the Australian parliament that was causing a jam. The Queen had not ordered him but he felt something had to be done and fair enough. I have no problem with a person being proud of their country but when they get to the redneck style and ignore hard truths that is a different scenario (!). I have friends in both across the Atlantic and in down under and they are great people.

Years ago also in my voluntary community efforts I knew a man here who had a flag in every room and when a visitor came up for a meal one night he smiled at the house owner and said that at least there wasn't one in the bathroom. The owner it seems frowned and in due course put up one there. Proud is fine but going too far is something else! haha.

ps I do have one picture of HM in my living room.......
