The Southern Spirit... Anyone heard of it? Great Southern Railways is releasing a new train, similar to, yet not as luxurious looking as the Great South Pacific Express, which was put out of service in 2005. The new train's first tour will travel from Uluru (Alice Springs) and reach Brisbane, via Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney some 14 days later.

There isn't much information at the official website (www.thesouthernspirit.com.au) yet, but from whats shown, it will be a magnificent train. With those prices, it'd have to be!

The new train's first tour will travel from Ayers Rock (Alice Springs) and reach Brisbane, via Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney some 14 days later.

Note: Quote changed to correct some info
Most of these trips have now been cancelled. These carriages are for some trips being attached to either the Indian Pacific Pacific or The Ghan, depending on the trip.

Mitchey, Ayers Rock isn't Alice Springs. Ayers Rock is quite a far distance from Alice Springs, and besides isn't really the world's biggest rock, but back to the trains.

On a side note, many of the Indian Pacific trips have also been cancelled, leaving maybe just one Indian Pacific a week, and not the scheduled two, which may or may not include the trips that were suppose to include the Southern Spirit carriages (they are just refurbished Indian Pacific/The Ghan carriages).

EDIT: The Southern Spirit (the name most likely came from the former Southern Aurora & Spirit of Progress trains) was suppose to start last November, but it seems as all 2009 tours have been cancelled.

Thanks Red Rattler :)

Oh, and by the way, I meant with the Alice Springs Uluru thing, that you have to catch the train at Alice Springs, because there's no station at Uluru.

So with what your saying, does this mean that the Southern Spirit is just additional coaches added onto the Ghan and Indian Pacific, plus running additional tours every now and then?

And with the reduction of services and cancellation of all 2009 tours with the Southern Spirit, does this mean that GSR is slowly going broke?

Thanks for the additional info

Mitch
