Grphics Card Problem

Getting Older :)
Apart from some recent problems with my Computer, a new one has started.

First my current computer is over 6 years old.

When I am in 2004, 2009 or a Game program I will be thrown out of the "game" to the Desktop (a number of times). The program icon thingo on my Taskbar is there so I can get back in with out any trouble.

This has been happening since I first started having what I think is/was a Hard Drive problem. The Hard Drive problem started while I was using 2009 a lot (on one day) and using 2009 Archive files that are on another Hard Drive. I think the Hard Drive that had my Archive Files on it may have been damaged some how. I can still view it and copy files to it but I am no longer sure it is safe to do that.

Could this sort of problem mean my Graphics Card is now having problems?

My current system is;
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz (2 CPUs)
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE
2GB RAM
and Windows XP (SP3)

I have had this happen several times to me as well... I cannot put my finger on the cause as I have no programs running other then trainz. It may just be something that our older computers don't agree with....:hehe::p My computer is 7-8 years old...

My 7 year old computer (see below) now dead and buried, under laundry in the garage, never had that problem.
If you are looking for a good reason to get a better video card, at least an NVidea 8000 series, I say go for it.

IF u are getting thrown out but the game is not exiting or closeing could be 2 things.....1 if u have an ATI like me and the vpr is running it will kick you cause the card stops responding and u get a pop up...2ed it may be a program in the background updateing or running Firewall/virus scan or something, printer,or software lot of times when that happens it will kick you.

Seeseeme,

Are you running TS at the same resolution as the Windows interface (e.g. both at 1024 x 768 or whatever).

Simking1 - vpr ??? not an acronyn I know...

Cheers

Hi Craig,

You're not alone with this problem . Whilst I haven't (so far) been kicked out of TC, T6 or T4, I am regularly being booted back to the desktop while using TS2009WBE :(, but as you say the game is minimised to the Task bar and you need only click on the icon to get back into, but it's a real pain in the a@#$.

My system is:
Intel(R) Core2 Duo 3GHz
Nvidia GeForce 8800GT
4GB Ram
Windows XP (SP3)

Could possibly be the system not being able to render textures fast enough causing it to bottleneck/stop responding temporarily.
Any odd noises coming from the comp, you may get that if a drives going.
Is there any frame stutter while your in "game".
I dont know if this happens but maybe the RAMS failing. If it is that will cause the problem. This is a guess, if it is failing the O/S will allways want its share, 512mb in your case so trainz wont have enough to run properly throwing you to the desktop.
Open the control panel, open system, hardware, device manager, any yellow exclamation marks?

Craig,

Getting dumped to the desktop like that is an indication that something is being updated like Windows its self, or some other program. Windows may have updated and now needs a reboot so it'll minimize your program. I've had that happen before and it's really annoying.

Your other problems are indicative of failing hardware. Sadly the computer is quite elderly now and giving up. It happens to the best of us. ;) This could be anything from capacitors and IC chips failing on the motherboard, to bad traces on the boards, or even bad solder joints.

Heat plays a big part in a lot of failures. The parts may work fine on cooler days, but as soon as the weather gets warm, the ambient temperature goes up, and the components are working harder so they begin to fail. In the very ancient days, I was a hardware technician and we used to heat and cool circuits to flush out failing components. The reports would come back to us from manufacturing about systems that would work until they heated up, etc., and by using freeze-spray and heat guns we could find the failing components.

In this day and age, it's a lot easier and less expensive to replace the boards particularly with the very small surface mounted components. When a circuit is about the size of an ant, it is nearly impossible to test and troubleshoot the problems so defective boards are are ground up into landfill fodder, and new ones are dispatched.

The only time I have ever experience being booted out of the game is when someone IM's me from like Skype or Yahoo Messenger. I also have had this occur when these programs log in or log out by themselves.

So I would think at least case scenario it is something in the background notifying you of something. However as no computer expert I would not have a clue.

Cheers,

AVG 9 has a bug that dose this.
Now that is an interesting comment. When my problems started with my Hard Drive and now this problem, I had an automatic update to AVG (AVG 9) to download. It was about 50MB and this happened on the same day all my problems started. I had forgotten about this until you mentioned it.

It is something I should/can look into. I had also thought of heat problems (its been very hot on certain days here) and also what maybe happening in the back ground. Each time it happens I have a look at what is happening with other programs in the background.

Many thanks for all the replies, its much appreciated. I am looking at replacing my computer but I want to do it when I have a chance to pick the right time. Any spare money I have is tied up for 3 month periods and one of those periods ends on Wednesday. With some new computer parts coming out I am thinking of waiting a few more months to replace it, also the value of the Aussie Dollar is getting better meaning my replacement computer could be a few Dollars less.

Many thanks again,

Craig

how bout this one.....I get booted when I attempt to get into the cabs of locos for the first time, every time. The message I get is this...

" The procedure entry point ?SetDisplayState@OneTextureMaterial@Jet@@MBAXPAVDisplay@2@@Z could not be located in the dynamic library link library Render 3DCore_7c.dll"

What the Frack? I am soo not a computer guy so any thoughts would be appreciative.
