Ground mist/fog effect?

Nope.

At least not as a built-in feature.

I suppose one could make an invisible spline, that emits a fog effect, but considering how smoke/vapor particle effects work in the sim, I doubt the result would look much like swirling fog, LOL. :o :hehe:

I don’t think splines support attached effects.

However, search the DLS for the badly-spelled “myst” which is a mist (particle emitter) effect. It’s kuid number is KUID2:118781:28014:3.

Yeah, I kind of figured that would be the case. A spline would be nice as one could have the effect follow terrain height :)

The myst effect is way too big for what I'm going for, I just want a small layer of fog blanketing the ground, something like what's used in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PEIEp0HeTQ&ab_channel=Lokboy96

There are a couple of smaller particle effect assets called “mist” by Rob4rails, again on the DLS. I think they were aimed at simulating spray from agricultural watering systems, but they might be worth looking at. As far as I know, there is no static, volumetric cloud asset possible in Trainz, so you might be out of luck if that’s what you are looking for.

Ok I confess. I didn’t watch much of the video because I didn’t know when the fog scene would come up. The still picture is much more informative. The so-called fog there is just a semi-transparent plane. Maybe someone will recognise the asset and tell you where to download it from. I personally don’t know where, but I must say it does not look very much like fog.

How would I go about making the plane an asset in trainz? Is there a flat plane spline/object asset I could retexture?

To make one from scratch for yourself, would involve learning a 3D creation program like Blender. The effort and time required to do that would not be justified if all you want to make is that one object.

Re-skinning someone else’s existing asset would be a much more viable approach, but you would need to look for objects that are technically suitable (i.e. based on planes with a semi-transparent texture material applied) and available for re-skinning (check the author’s License conditions in the asset’s config.txt file).

Another option is to find someone who already makes assets for Trainz and is willing to make the object(s) for you.

A fourth option is to track down the fog thing in that screenshot. Maybe contact whoever made that Thomas video and ask them if they know the kuid number of the asset and where it came from. Or do a Google for Trainz assets and terms like fog or mist and see if anything comes up. There are many third party websites out there that host Trainz assets not held on the Download Station.

Speaking of the DLS, I found an old TRS2006 asset called TSP_fog1 by creator segy, <kuid:71378:1312>. Not sure of its structure, but it says it’s designed to make trains look like they are gradually disappearing into a fog, so could be worth checking out.
