GPU's and 4K monitors

I'm getting ready to have a new pc built in a couple of weeks and may also get a new monitor. Right now I am running a GTX 680 with a 24 inch 1080P monitor. For the new machine I am going to get either a GTX 980 or a 980ti. If I decide to stay at 1080p, is there anything to be gained by getting the ti or is that more for 4K displays? If I do get a new monitor, should I go to a 4K. How much of a difference would it make? Trainz is the main purpose of the machine, I don't watch movie or dodo any type of photo or video work on it. I do play a few other games but not any of the shooter types, mostly things like Cities Skylines, Civ 5, that "other " train sim and a few other RTS games.

It would benefit by smoothing things out, as far as looks, for sure. With 1080p, a 980ti wouldn't be a waste. Besides, if you do just go 1080p, you will have a GPU that last many years, and when you finally get 4k, you'll be ready to go.

AMDs Polaris architecture and Nvidias Pascal architecture are not far away. If you want GPUs optimised for higher resolutions as a result of the VR push, then it might be worth waiting for them.

Hold off, there are new video cards coming, 4K is a lot more pixels and that means it will be easy to see the frame rates drop in TANE on even a GTX980.

Don't forget it wasn't that long ago that Windwalkr did a video on a buitin route in TANE that showed 7 fps in parts using a GTX 980 on was it 1024 by 768? TANE has improved but not by that much.

Cheerio John
