GMAX or Blender? I plan to begin models for Trainz.

I like the ability to package all dependencies in one package.
Rolling Stock might be on the DLS. I guess I don't know yet, I was kinda mad at the DLS yesterday...

"Certain Crowd"? Sorry, I am my own person. Nobody pulls my strings, not to worry. I may have joined a website, but that means nothing. The people I know on these forums I will probably never meet. So there is no crowd to it. Thank You.
Cheers.

If you think figuring out the DLS is bad wait until you start to create. Read through the content creators guide to get a better idea of how things work. Seriously though I'd start with reskinning it will give you a feel for the textures and config.txt files. After that I'd then move onto boxcars first followed by locos. That way you may create something before giving up in total frustration.

Also get some one else to check your work, this cuts down on the mistakes but doesn't eliminate them. Simple things like the class of loco, the amount of fuel carried etc can get put in incorrectly.

Cheerio John

To be fair, although the majority of creators start with something simple (like a house or the famous brick box tutorial), and many (myself included) never graduate beyond, there are a small minority of creators whose first real project is a fully featured steamer (e.g. lielestosbrat). So it's not impossible - just hard...

Personally I think I'd at least install the program and have a play before releasing a publication schedule. Ahh - the exuberance of youth - reminds me of joining a band and spending days deciding on a name when we couldn't play a note between us :o

The answer to making many shapes is simply scaling and extruding.
I don't know about trains but a ships hull can be made in ten minutes.
Using Blender. Make a circle and delete the top half. G to grab and pull the vertices down to make a keel shape and curving boat outline.
Join the top of the half circle with a curved line to make a deck.
Select all A key. Change to plan view and Extrude sections. E key.
Shaping as you go with S for Scale.
Working in plan view and front view
At the bow end pull the vertices in, S and raise them up to raise the bow in side view. W key I think theN merge at centre makes a sharp raised bow.
Extruding cylinders for rigging or funnels.
Put plan in background to work to scale.

10 minute boat at least any shaped boat hull in Blender.

P.S. Just as easy to make lighthouses buoys, windmill or any other shape you want, but in that case make the basic shape in plan view and extrude up in side or front view.
Perhaps the best way to get started with Blender and to experiment making different items other than boxes.
Made all the castles of North Wales with Similar method. Castle towers are just cylinders and the castle wall are just extended or extruded cubes. with battlement added.

Just wondering if Illinoiscentral has decided on Blender and if he has downloaded it yet as that is the very FIRST step. I would imagine it would be pointless discussing what you are going to make with it until you know if suitable for requirements and if you are comfortable in using it. I no longer make content for Trainz or use Trainz but I still use Blender. It doesn't matter what you make to begin with but you do need to get used to using it and learn what keys do what before you can even make a start. Just my humble opinion. Barry

Okay Barry,
I need to know, one is Blender free download or pay. Two, I need to find a tutorial or something so I can do this properly.
Thank You.

Thanks alot Nathan!
I'm installing Blender right now...maybe sometime in the next century I will get to use it [slow computer]. Hopefully one day I'll be making models as good as NS37! Now I need to know if Blender has a screenshots thing so that I can upload pictures for you guys.

Which OS are you using, XP or Vista?

If it's Vista there is a screenshot program built in called 'Snipping Tool' found under your accessories folder.

Not sure about the built in rendering as I use 3DS Max.

Yeah I just installed it but I can't find it anywhere! This game is so frustrating. My sound is still screwed up and I deleted a whole mess of things last night... Very tiring.

How I can use element "point" in Blender like in 3dmax?

In creating models in 3dmax to link boggies or other element of lokomotive I use element "point" (Helpers - > point)

Where I find this element in Blender? Is Blender consist any element like point in 3dmax or not? If Blender don't have this element, how I can link detailes of lokomotive and detailes in cocpit?

Help me please!

You'll save yourself a lot of trouble by reading the WikiBook or my Tutorials. You make helper points by inserting an 'Empty'.

illinoiscentral, you should find my web Trainz Resources Directory site very helpful for your project.

You can find a few Blender tutorials in the Tutorials section, plenty of plans and lots of other fantastic stuff.

You can find links to Paul Hobbs' excellent tutorials by using the drop down list under Contributors on the right side of every page. Paul's is the second entry under 44090.

Barry, You mini tutorial for ship hulls was interesting. Can I encourage you to do something a little more detailed for my web site?

Other Blender tutorial links will be greatly appreciated folks.

Regards,

John

Hello John I no longer have tutorials on my site as using site for other things. The tutorial images I used previously for tutorials were on my site but all deleted now.

I think the extruding method is the best way to get started with Blender and make any shape you want very simply starting from just half a circle.
As mentioned a boat hull can be made in ten minutes or so any shape you want.

Blender has its own game engine which is due for an update in June and there are a mass of things that can be done in Blender.

I found this site today which has many tutorials but for the Blender Game engine and for Blender. May be of interest as gives an insight into animating textures, real time shadows, normal maps, and many things that can be done. It is for the latest version I think so seems very up to date.
