FPS Metering

I've just upgraded to a new machine which is running Vista Ultimate 64bit and I was just wondering if TRS2009 has a capabilty to show me how many FPS i'm currently getting while in driver???

I remember reading a post a while ago that mentioned this program; http://www.fraps.com/
I haven't tried it, so I don't know if it works...
Hopefully someone that has tried it can bring us up to speed...

FRAPS works great in my Vista 64bit machine - no problems what so ever.

Yes I know of Fraps but was wondering if somewhere within Trainz you can enable an FPS action to show the exact FPS you're getting within game like so many other games have.

Maybe a console command line system enabling this and other commands: eg: show_fps_1 etc after hitting the tilde `key

Hi BB4000UP,

You can get a running fps if you can run 2006 in windowed mode. Specify your window hieght just a little smaller that the screen resolution you are running. Un fortunately only some video cards will allow this.
In your trainzoptions.txt add this:-

-windowed
-height=xxxx
-width=xxxx
-centred
and remove the -fullscreen

I downloaded fraps a few weeks ago. I bring it up on the desktop select the FPS tab and then start Trainz normally with no special window. Fraps displays fps in the corner of the screen. Works in 2006 or 2009, I'm running an Nvidia card. Now if I could just get the frame rate up!

How are your FPS now? You may need to either update the drivers on the graphics card, or just upgrade the card and that can get you somewhat better performance, depending on the rest of your system. Installing more RAM can also increase your performance, unless you have 3 GB or more, then you probably won't notice the performance gain in a RAM upgrade.

I know when I got my new Gateway LX6200-01, I was running the integrated ATI HD 3200 graphics and got less than 30 FPS on most routes. Now I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850, and the only thing holding me back now is the AMD Phenom 9500 processor, but soon to be AMD Phenom II 940 processor. I also have 8 GB of RAM, so the only bottleneck in my computer is the processor.

Running 2006, I can get on average about 20-30 FPS on a route like Marias Pass, 30-50 on Death Valley Line, and less than 30 on the Darjeeling Himilayan Railway just to give you a comparison. Also, I run with the settings all maxed out (24x Anti-Aliasing, 16x Anisotropic Filtering, High quality Mipmap detail, Quality Adaptive Anti-Aliasing, and maxed in Trainz)

Here's where ignorance can be bliss! 2006 was my first venture into Trainz and never knowing my fps I enjoyed it quite a bit. When 2009 came along I noticed a significant decrease in frame rate very choppy. Looking through the forums I noted everyone mentioning fps which led me to fraps and low and behold my frame rate is lucky to hit 10 or 12 in 2009! Running with 2006 it is better but not as much as I would have expected based on never noticing a problem.

My system is definitely not optimized for Trainz 2.8G Pentium 4, with 1.5G, Nvidia Gforce5200 video. I'd like to upgrade the video card but I'm seeing all of the newer cards using PCI express sockets. The system is on its 4th year but so far Trainz is the only thing pushing it to the limit. Hard to justify a total upgrade at this point. I did just recently upgrade to a 22" wide screen monitor and optimal resolution is in the 1600 x 1200 range. Stepping it down did not appreciably change the fps so I enjoy the clarity instead.
If anyone has a suggestion, I'm all ears.
