Anyone know why it was off for 6hrs 24mins?

I thought it was my system until I saw the gap between posts when it came back up a few minutes ago.

I don't recall seeing any announcement.

I was having problems reaching other websites during that period too. It didn't appear to be geographical in nature.

It was a successful practice run for N3V's traditional Christmas server crash. We could be taking bets on exactly which day it will happen and how long it will last this time.

For mine; 27 December until 7 January.

That wouldn't coincide with the chrissy break would it, it's the cynical streak in me saying this.
I will learn to read the post I'm answering one of these days:o

We're sorry for any inconveniences this downtime caused. But it looks like everyone pulled through unscathed. :)

Thank you for feeding the chipmunks and hamsters again. This should keep them happy for a few more months. ;)

It is very well to say this BUT why were we offline? Did your staff Xmas party take longer than anticipated and someone forgot to look after the office??

Well tracing the route suggests that ThePlanet/softlayer had some serious routing problems.

FYI, this is a truly third-world ISP.

Maybe the office staff at ThePlanet forgot to plug in the routers when they disconnected the disco ball after they had their party. :)

Softlayer is KNOWN for having routing problems. They also run their servers on recycled hard drives. They also have KNOWN database execution issues. How does this relate to US you ask?

1) Routing problems are the culprit that causes us to become catatonic when the forum is unreachable.
2) Recycled hard drives = data loss and the necessity to perform hardware replacements and LENGTHY restore procedures.
3) Database execution issues are the reason that the upload bot/DLS/etc choke frequently. If you cannot reliably perform database tasks, there is no way that you can keep a database-centric site (which is exactly what the DLS is) functioning properly.

And to top off these wonderful customer-unfriendly practices, softlayer has NO onsite technical support. They outsource their entire infrastructure management. This results in massive delays at times to even get them to admit that they are having problems. You can do a trace route that proves that they are having routing issues, and they will literally call you a liar when you ask them about it.

Why anybody would give these people money is beyond my ability to comprehend. There are cheaper and more reliable hosting services.

Got that right. I have no intention of starting "mine is better than yours", but I have three sites all running nicely on GoDaddy. Cheap and well-tended technical help.
