Former TS12 Player with questions

Hello everyone. It seems like an eternity since I've posted here. I was an avid player on TS12 for quite some time and created many of my own assets for a large scene that I created in TS12, but life got in the way and its been a couple of years since I've played. I still have all the old files for my assets, but would have to do a clean install of TS12 to play. I have some questions before I come back to play. Would I be better off purchasing TS19 or sticking with my TS12. If I stuck with TS12, is it still supported? Does the download manager still work? If I chose to go with the new TS19, is TS12 content compatible? I have many many many hours in custom assets, and reskins of locomotives and rolling stock, but is it all too old to work now? Will I get warnings on all my content now that weren't there before? I was hoping you all could give me your opinions on what to do.

I look forward to every ones feedback.

Welcome back Nicholas!

You are better off moving forward. TS12 is nearly no longer supported and is on life support now. although, people still use it. TRS19 offers a lot more in the way of better graphics and 64-bit support and such things as up to 15k meter draw distances, shadows, lighting effects, moving points on switches, and other things that aren't found in TS12. I do recommend installing TS12 at least initially to transfer content over by creating CDP files. There's one thing that needs mentioning about TRS19. You can install the content now in a separate folder and not in the same folder as the program. I put my program on my smaller SSD and my data, for example on my much larger E: drive.

There is a Content Manager just as there is in other versions of Trainz. It's quite a bit different than the old TS12 version, but a lot more versatile too. Once you get used to it, you'll find that it does the same things as before.

You may have to do some rather simple updates, such as icons, and textures fixes and maybe some other minor things, but as I said most content works fine with about 99% being a good number. The one ones that definitely do not work are Speed Trees. This was due to IDV who created Speed Tree software forcing an upgrade when the version was upgraded was required, causing all older Speed Trees not to work. We can help you with this.

I imported all my previous routes including some from earlier than TS12 with little problem other than my horrible construction that I thought was so good at the time.
 
I'm still a keen TS2012 user, but I have TS2019 as well. I've imported all kinds of assets, locomotives and rolling stock from nearly all the earlier versions of the simulator into TS2019 and have had very few problems. Sometimes things like engine specs or cab views & etc need to be updated, but none of it is difficult to do.

I would go with both, despite the additional work involved. TS12 works just fine, there are many assets worth creating at build 3.5, and they can still be uploaded to the DLS. In many cases converting older assets to the newer standard will be more work than is justified, but the community would still appreciate the older versions.

On the other hand, the new features available under the new standards required for TRS2019 allows you to create really outstanding items that look quite stunning with the enhanced graphics. But it is a lot more work, and, certainly to start with, progress will be slow, and you will probably want to concentrate on just a few special things. Working on both TS12 and TRS2019 will provide variety.
 
All the rolling stock I have uploaded to the DLS was made in TS2012 3.7 and works fine in TS2019 so I agree with SaliorDan and I would say don't abandon TS2012 just yet. I build my routes in TS2012 as well, - mostly because it's just easier and if I feel it's worth doing I'll transfer them to TS2019.
 
If ever you should develop type 1 Narcolepsy Tony you'll be saying it's easier too.

I do work on routes in TS2019 when I'm feeling more wakeful and yes I do agree the tools are better, but they are not so easy to use if I'm having a bad day with sleepiness.

I tried to look up your assets but had no luck, what is your KUID prefix, I can't find your assets? I would love to try your assets in my routes. I have had great luck upgrading assets from TS12 to TANE and the TRS19.
 
I greatly appreciate everyone's feedback. I think I am going to get my copy of TS12 back up and running and updated. Then I will get all of my custom assets reinstalled before I decide to migrate to TS2019 or run it simultaneously as many of you suggest.

@Christopher824, I too looked up my KUID and noticed none of the assets I had are there, not sure why. I do still have all the files and will have to reinstall them. They were primarily Detroit, MI based stuff like scenery such as the Henry Ford DTI Catenary Arches, Detroit People Mover Stations, and other prominent detroit buildings as well as many signs and a set of Michigan style Eagle traffic signals that Boat helped me with years ago. Also lots of GTW, DT&I, Detroit Connecting, Detroit Terminal RR, Delray Connecting RR, and DTSL engine reskins.
