Fixing Missing Dependencies?

This is probably a real newbie question, but I downloaded a couple new assets for my Trainz2009 but they are not available in the program and are listed in the content manager as "missing dependencies." For example, I downloaded a CSX loco but while I see it listed in the rolling stock menu, the text is pink and no preview comes up in the little window. This happened with a Norfolk Southern loco, a K4 and its tender as well as a lamp and BI2 containers.

How do I go about fixing that? Or can I?

Using Content Manager, right click the kuid and select View dependencies to list missing dependencies and check View errors and warnings to list errors. Ignore anything listed as a warning since it won't prevent you from using that kuid.

I probably won't get a chance to "play with my trains" until tomorrow" but I will see about what you suggest then. But while that may show me what is missing or in "error," is there a means to repair it? I'm guessing that perhaps the dependent files just didn't download properly? If so, would I need to redownload it?

Without knowing what errors you have it is not easy to give you simple instructions on how to correct them. To start you off you could list a few of the errors you are seeing here or in a new thread and someone will be able to give you advice on how to deal with them.

You will almost certainly require PEVsofts applications to help you deal with many of the errors and they are available here:

You could also read the first thread in the TS2010 forum which shows you how to fix errors but as I said you could list a few here to start you off.

It might seem a little daunting at first but it is in fact not too difficult and is very satisfying to get rid of the red exclaimation mark by making your own corrections.

Start a new thread, copy and paste the KUID number of the asset with the errors, copy and paste the messages, after that any techy type can duplicate the problem and walk you thru the steps to fix it. Once you have done a few of them you'll be able to figure out more yourself.

As for missing dependencies, select the asset with the "puzzle piece";

Right click, View Dependencies, in that window select View in main list. Now the simple way is CTRL A to select all, right click and select Download, hope the download helper is in a good mood and won't get the hiccups trying to sort what's already installed from what needs to be downloaded. If it chokes, try again, this time selecting only the ones with the DS icon instead of the local or built in icon, download a few at a time.

Whichever way it works, it's rarely done yet, the route or whatever is still showing the puzzle piece, so now go to the filter and select missing dependencies=true. What you'll find is that dependencies of dependencies fail to download automatically - for example a session needs a loco so it shows the missing dependency icon, download the loco and the session STILL shows the missing dependency icon, nothing is missing but the loco has a missing dependency of its own, the download helper failed to get the bogies or cabview.

Occasionally you'll get a question mark with a KUID number, that indicates a dependency that can't be found on the download station. Any asset that shows that it would be advisable to just delete it for now, wait until you got the hang of fixing the normal stuff before going on to complicated games like "google the KUID".

To your first question the simple answer is yes and you should see my answer to emmaroyd above.

The answer to the second question depends on how and where you downloaded from.

If you download from the DLS black pages you only download the asset you request and any dependancies you do not already have need to be downloaded separately.

If you downloaded in Content Manager then usually any additional dependancies are downloaded with the asset you request but sometimes is does miss a few.

If you have downloaded from another Trainz site the file you download might contain most of the files needed but sometimes additional files are in a separate dependancy pack which you also need to download.

When you view the dependancies in CM any you do not have and are available on the DLS will show with a DS icon beside them. Clicking and dragging the asset into the top left download window should pick up the missing asset(s) and you should be able to download them.
If the missing dependancies have a question mark in the icon and are described as unknown location then you will need to do a bit more work to find them. This usually happens where the asset has been downloaded from a source other than the DLS. You will need to go back to the site you downloaded the file from and look for dependancy packs. Sometimes the asset can be found by searching on the DLS pages because occasionly CM does not find all the assets.

Any that still elude you can often be found by doing a search here using the search button or by doing a search in Google. The latter works very well and will usually find forum posts as well as many more.

As a last resort you can always set up a thread here asking for help.
