fill track

Does anyone remember the old fill track, where you grab the spline and you could lift it up and the railbed would automatically fill uneven ground. It looked very realistic when done. Is there some still out there or has anyone made some new stuff for trs 12

I don't know about the old fill track, but I think I know what you mean. Norfolksouthern37's track (freeware at JointedRail) does that.

These 3 in TS12 built-in tracks will do that:
JR MS Lt Grey dirty (Terrain),<kuid2:45324:38017:1>
JR MS Lt Grey (Terrain),<kuid2:45324:38014:3>
JR MS Pink (Terrain),<kuid2:45324:38016:1>

Does anyone know HOW this is done?

Is it in the config or the mesh (im files), and if the latter, what is it that makes the edge hug the ground?

I think it's the mesh files. If you view them in wireframe you'll see that the track has an embankment that goes a long way underground.

I tend to shy away from fill track, except in a choice few problematic locations, where adjacent tracks are much higher than the closeby lower tracks.

Oftentimes a fill track will show a hard, defined edge, where it meets the textured baseboard (reguiring the fill track image to be edited, and reskinned to match the nearby ground texture).

I use: Concrete_Bank_Spline, as it looks like a ballast texture ... and even then, I try to hide it, by bringing ground each and every grid corner up to the track bed, manually by hand.
