What on earth is going on here?

It's one piece of track with this in the middle. I've looked for errant bits of stuff, I've tried settling the track onto the ground, I've tried smoothing the terrain underneath, I've tried deleting the track and replacing it. I'm all out of ideas!
Anyone had this happen and what do I do?

I think you have some extra spline points and when you connected the track to another segment, the rails crossed over weirdly. I've had that occur once or twice in the past. It's one of those things that occurs and if you wanted to do it you couldn't.

Insert a spline point on either side of the lump and delete the track and re-lay it down again.

Okay so using the Marquee tool and dragging it over the selected area gave me the three assets I was expecting. It also gave me <kuid:-1:6270>, an unknown asset. I thought that was odd as the route doesn't complain about missing dependencies. So I double checked that and no. So I went and had a look in the original route to see if I'd stuffed up but it's in the original as well!

Then I deleted the track, dug a big hole (Height Down), filled it back in again (Set Height), re-layed the track, and problem gone.

That might have been it... Pesky little spline points!
They sure are. When I had one not long ago it caused a consist to take a dive into the ground. I was driving along and encountered twisted rails with raised ballast just like yours.
