Fatal error every time

WillPac

Willamette Pacific RR
TRS2006, apparently programmed to completely quit working at then end of its support. The last four times in Surveyor, tinkering on existing routes, only to have the screen go black, the Trainz window drop to 25% of the screen size, and a second window telling me a fatal error has occured.

Now mind you, if this was happening on the same route, I could understand something must be wrong with it. But this was FOUR different routes, two built into Trainz, two downloaded. But the further kicker is this: it happened on TWO computers! This desktop crashed its last two times (single P4, 4GB RAM, running XP) and the last two times on my notebook (dual core, 4GB RAM, running Vista). Once it crashed all I was doing was moving the cursor, not adding or removing anything.

This has me stumped and more than discouraged. I thought this program would be the thing to allow me to run trains the way I have always wanted, but more than 9 months later, I have serious doubts.

Delete your Assets.tdx and Assets.bkp files and restart Trainz. It'll rebuild your database, and you should be good to go.

I know the frustrations, Ron!

Thanks John, as always you are a HUGE help. I will give this a try when I get home tonight. Could it be an asset that is corrupt? I find it odd that it happened on 2 PCs, on 4 different routes.

nickelplateroad is right

Oh, the woes continue! Finally got a new power cord for my laptop (nothing drains the battery faster than Trainz!), looked to do what John had suggested, and discovered I didn't even HAVE an assets.tdx file. Did find the assets.bkp file which I deleted, then launched CMP.

Contrary to what I read, it did NOT rebuild the database, and now nothing showed up under any of the tabs; Surveyor or Railyard wouldn't launch. Nothing, even after multiple restarts.

So I let the PC spend two hours copying my Local folder to a safe place, so I can remove this POS tonight and reinstall, then spend ANOTHER two hours copying it back and God knows HOW long for CMP to recommit 15 GB of assets.

I have posted this solution to TRAINZ 2006 freezes and fatal errors several times. You shouldn't have to re-install your game. (However, if you've already deleted the assets.bku you may have to. Is it still in your Recycle bin???)

Here is the solution:

Go into the Cache folder and look for the "assets.bku" file. Copy this file and paste it into your main TRS2006 folder.... then RE-NAME it assets.tdx. Then restart your computer. TRS2006 should open just fine after that.

Dave's fix works on fatal errors, too?!?

Yes, it should still be in the Recycle Bin. Wow, you know, I have one of your posts on this saved in a text file, as I have had to use it many times when Trainz wouldn't launch. But I had no idea it would work as well for these fatal errors that crash when working on routes. Thanks, Dave, I will give it a go when I get home from work.

Well, there's no guarantee it will work, but it's worth a try and better than re-installing everything!:D
Alas, I DID do your fix, and voila, Trainz loaded just fine finally. However, after tinkering with the downloaded Erie Northern layout for maybe 1/2 hour or so, here came the black screen again, and the fatal error box with all of its indecipherable techno garbage.

So I uninstalled and reinstalled the program last night. Happily, removing TRS2006 does NOT remove my local folder, so all of my downloaded content is still there. I did NOT, however, launch the program to see if it works now. I had had enough with this thing, so I fired up Madden instead and took out my frustrations on Mark Sanchez and Matthew Stafford!

I gave the same problem, but in the startup! Every time I click start up, i pops up along with a fatal error message. Then it stops responding. What's going on?! And how do I fix it D:

Thanks in advance
