External drive choices....

Alrighty gang,

I find myself in need of some more drive space, the two 500 gig drives are getting a might full (Trainz takes up about 300 gig on one of them).

So my thought was to get an external drive (1 or 2 TB) and install 10 and 12 on it.....

My Alienware Laptop (M17X-R1) has USB2.0, Firewire 1394 a and b.

So, anyone have any experience at this, or am I in uncharted waters?

I had trainz installed on my external USB 2.0 1TB drive at 1 point in time. Worked perfectly fine just a little slower loading for obvious reasons.

The newer USB 3.0 is said to be up to 10 times faster than the older USB 2.0 so the possibility is that an external drive with 3.0 capability would be fine! Of course this assumes that your computer is also capable of USB 3.0?

Cheers
Russell.

I have a Seagate Freeagent Extreme 1Tb esata external. It rocks but you have to have esata/sata3 external connectivity of motherboard and case of course.
But!...
I did replace my hard drive recently with a Western Digital 1Tb sata3 64mb cache for 55 dollars :D
You could get 2 at that price and still have change of the cost of an esata external.
I only keep my drives for 1 year maximum these days. Write the fitment date on them in a permanent marker.
Be warned that with some early gigabyte USB3 motherboards if you enable USB 3, your PCIE slot, (graphics card) halves its data rate.

I have one of these drives since my mobo has esata built in. The drive speed is quite decent, and I've run Trainz from it.
