Everyone know of the missing Manning Wardle?

stonks goin up
"Lew" has been missing since 1936, somewhere in Brazil.
I have looked for any 1ft11 3/4in (600mm) - 2ft (610mm) railways in Brazil, and have found one. A Portland Cement line near São Paulo is a possibility, but a Google search has no details about it.
This site has a bit of information, a fair bit, but still no solid answer. Will everyone here please try and look for clues in their spare time?

EDIT* Thanks to teddytoot, we may have a new lead. Argentinian shipping details.

Well, honestly, I don't know where to start looking. Got some porjects to tend too. I will keep it on mind tho. Good luck on finding it!

oooh, i might have to create a short story based on this. Sad story, I'd love to find her personally...If i had the stomach to go there. Even if she's been scrapped, One would love to just give her closure, to find out where her story ends, of if it even has.

I recently saw a letter in a railway magazine (can't remember which unfortunately) where the author had done some research and found out that there was some reference in the shipping details to Argentina and suggesting a new possible line of investigation.

How long ago were the shipping details teddytoot? If we find the year, and eventually, the loco, I will need a rescue team to reclaim the loco so we can take it back to where it first ran, the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway

I found reference to a few 2-6-2's of various gauges in Argentina on the web, but no pictures...

Sorry I can't help. I just saw this when glancing at the magazines at our local Smiths to see if there was anything I wanted and as I am going away for while, it will be gone when I get back if it hasn't gone already. Speaking from memory I think he had looked at the original shipping details and found that the firm had some connection with Argentina hence the suggestion of the possibility of Argentina being the destination and not Brazil. That's as much as I can remember.

Hi,

I was researching lew and found that it was shipped on the SS 'Sabor' by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. (Royal Mail Lines). it sunk in 1943 by a torpedo in the indian ocean.

I've spent many hours on the net looking for any info on Lew, it was shipped in 1936 on the Sabour from Swansea maybe to Brazil although there is some doubt as to whether it was Brazil or somewhere else. As the ship wasn't sunk until 1943 Lew must have ended up somewhere.

I'm now thinking perhaps it was regauged or maybe the wheel arrangement changed which is why looking for a missing 2 ft Manning Wardle 2-6-2 may not throw anything up.

Edit: Just come across this, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/steam_tech/message/397

I had a thought recently; I know of a 2ft gauge WD alco 4-6-0 that was shipped to australia, converted to 30" gauge, and had its side-tanks ripped off and coupled to a small, 4-axle tender. I don't know where it worked (for years i figured the Puffing Billy), but it got me thinking along the lines of clam. What if the engine was converted? it could have been stripped of its side tanks, converted to a 2-6-0 (assuming the engine is arranged similar to an Ivatt 2MT...that is, with the trailing truck only supporting the cab) and coupled to a tender. For all we know, this engine is still puffing around a mill in argentina put on the frame of a different engine--I know of an ALCo engine that had its cab and boiler put on the frame of a Vulcan (US) engine. it could be that's what happened to Lew.

just a thought. there's many avenues to explore in this yet, and she may just be still alive, working somewhere in the backwaters of a South American country.

You are not thinking of the Baldwin 2-6-0 BLW45215/17 which was converted in about 1974 to run at Dreamworld, Coomera, Queensland. However my source makes no reference to a gauge change although this could be quite likely. Perhaps an Aussie Trainzer can give us more information.

@privite & teddytoot i wish i did, i just remember seeing an Accucraft model mentioned in Garden Railways' new products thread. It was one of those things that went like "Oh, that's an interesting story," then i filed it away and never did any more research. I do remember, however, that the engine was a 4-6-0, not a 2-6-0.

also, they (accucraft) don't carry the engine anymore, so i can't find a picture of it.

The loco did not have its side tanks ripped off, and is either a 2-6-0 or 2-6-2.(I think 2-6-2) The loco has Perry on the front whick means that it came from a Queensland sugar cane mill.:)

Unfortunately, when I went there for the first time last year, the train was shut down, and some of the tracks were covered over with garden. I think this hapenned after the addition of a monorail.
I did, however, see some carriages in a siding, and from some videos I know that the train went clockwise around the track. The carriages were pointing in the direction of the loco, and there was no loco. I'd love to know what hapenned to it!

EDIT: They do have a Baldwin. It's a 4-6-0 and has no side tanks, just a tender.

little side note (sorry for being off-topic) but the 2-6-0 (far as i can tell from my trusty steamlocomotive.info) has apparently left the building...so to speak. It's not listed at Coomera, though a 4-8-0 still is.

anyway, back to the missing manning wardle.
