So what is the purpose of the idle wav files?

Is it when the train is off?

Or is it when it is going fast enough to not need all that cranking sound in the beginning?

I assume down and up are self explanatory

Idle? Sounds like when throttle is at 0.

The 8 "idle" sounds are the sound of the engine given a particular throttle position. The assumption is that there are 8 throttle positions/notches. Whenever the throttle is in one of these positions then the appropriate "idle" sound is played continuously until the throttle is moved to a different notch when the appropriate up or down transition is played followed by a loop of the sound for the new notch. Simple really eh?
