Draw distance question...

Does the draw distance depend on how big a route is? This is how much draw distance I get on maximum on the Prospector line route from Trainz Pro Routes and to me, it doesn't seem like much distance in the background:

In the latest versions of Trainz the draw distance is govenred by a 'Limiter' which automatically reduces the draw distance to try to match the graphics load with the computers resources. The route's size is irrelevant, the issue is the amount of content in the current view. It is quite possible to simply rotate the camera away from a hi-content area (a big yard or a city scene) to a lo-content area and watch the draw distance increase as the load diminishes.

In older versions of Trainz the draw distance was absolute - if the load got too much: boom - hello desktop!

Hi Andy,
Can I please ask a related ( I hope ) question : Often when I am moving great distances in map view the game just freezes and I have to abort- in TR10 and 12.
What causes this please.
I am still running win XP still and the slider is set to minimum , there are a few stutters and the graphics is ok.

jjanmarine3: Mine does too..So sometimes I reboot and or change from Open GL to Direct X or vice versa..Sometimes that seems to kick em in the pants..

Hi Bob,
After I installed T12 I found out that I cannot use Direct X at all, the scripting in that session went all haywire and unreadable and the graphics are affected too. Is it possible that some routes/sessions need Direct X and some work better with Open GL , or is it one or the other only ?

jjanmarine3: No not neccessarily..I think basicly there are geared some what to open GL..However mine will run in both, I get a little graphic change when I do run Direct X, Trees get more Transparent..I will say this, one time I could not make a screenshot and it turned out I had to switch to Open GL..I was running In Direct X..

Check the vertex offset in Options on the Launcher panel You will find that the wording is illegible with this set. You will then find that direct x gives you better graphics.

well this limitor thing ruined the taste of train.that my opinion as i am versy unsaisfied with this.almost everything vanishes when we go into cab

That's why I moved to build my route in 2012 instead of 2010. Draw distance is much better in 2012 (but in cab is almost the same).

Wouldn't it be the best to pick enable/disable "limiter" checkbox or option button somewhere in options (graphics tab, near DirectX vs. OpenGL options)?

What do you think of those.
I can help with cab draw distance (works only on scenery objects, not splines or baseboards)
Find config file of all your 3d scenery items (houses, trees):
!!!a lot of work!!! with every single object but I guarantee: anywhere whether its surveyor, cab or free roaming - objects will be visible up to 15km far (I wish backdrops would render for 50km)
type these parameters in:
type--------"backdrop" (has to be in quotes in order to work in later than 2006 versions)
backdrop--1
Trainz build: 2.6 (later versions do not support backdrops and consider them errors)
If the route is built-in, objects start render up to 15km in TS2009, but in TS2012, only locally-created routes render backdrops properly (I tried Balizeno-Mosti, none of "backdropped" 3d items render beyond 3.5km on my machine while on newly created local route - all moded objects are seen from 15km away)
